Hotel or guesthouse for visitors from the Jewish faith
Hello
I was in Southport yesterday with a friend who used to be in the Jewish faith. My friend used to visit Southport on holidays in the late 1950s, and used to stop in a hotel or guesthouse, somewhere near the Marine Lake (north of the Pier entrance), that catered for Orthodox Jewish visitors. "Catered" was literal, as part of the religion involves restrictions on food and how it is prepared, so visitors could not eat at other establishments.
My friend was a young child at the time and cannot recall what the place was called, and there is noone in the family to ask. We drove round and round looking in various roads, but nothing rang a bell. It seems that the place may have closed around 1961-2, as the family went on holidays elsewhere after that time.
Both my friend and I have very happy memories of Southport, although I only went there as a day visitor. This is a great forum - bringing back so many memories.
It would be good to locate the place and fill in a gap in memory. Does anyone have any ideas? I have read about the Avondale Hotel on here but this rings no bells - although, has it now been demolished?
We would be most grateful for any information.
Thanks

The guy that owned it was called Barney Bloch, his son Geof was in my class at school and is now a mega ranking Freemason, so I am told.

I also recall there used to be a small guesthouse in Stanley St, in the block between Seabank Rd and Leicester St. I think it only really operated when Jewish holidays were on, the couple who owned it, use buy from the Kosher butchers in Bold St owned by the Windhams's.

It was probably the Sandhurst Hotel at 33-35 Leicester St. It is a large imposing Victorian brick building. I think it is now St. Vincent's Care Home. It was strictly Kosher and catered for Orthodox Jewish holiday makers and some residents too. My Gran was the cook there until it closed in the late 50s/early 60s. As she was a gentile, she was always hidden away 'backstage' as it were.
Her immediate boss was Mrs Lobell, who taught her an awful lot about Kosher food and how to prepare it. I remember her always bringing home lots of eggs in cups, because if there was the slightest trace of blood in them, she was not allowed to use them.
