There is no doubt, that it would have been preferable, for the European powers to have never entered Africa....By leaving the 'natives' to continue living their low-tech sustainable, straw hut, loincloth and spear lifestyle - the world and the environment would have been better off.

If they had no knowledge of life outside their own piece of jungle, they would surely have continued to live as they always had.

Mother country? You mean we imposed our language on them and stole their natural resources leaving them in poverty. Had we not done that maybe there'd be less need for them to seek a perceived better life in a country where they already have a grasp of the language.

Our rule in India was also abhorrent. We were responsible for the deaths of millions through ill conceived partition, massacres such as Amritsar and famine.

I had to run to look into the mirror to see if I looked as I did in the 70s. Sadly, the same old woman was looking back at me. I can handle that, but I can't say the same for the PNP's attitudes. Quite frankly, it disgusts me. So does the belief that colonisation was a benign thing.

Those who defend it, believe that patriotism precludes criticism of colonialism. It doesn't. I love the country of my birth. I hate the rape and plunder of countries they occupied and what it did to their indigenous people. I live in one such country. They haven't forgotten. Being British born hasn't always been a good thing.

'Why do you come through all the different countries to get to Britain?'


When I was in India they all wanted to go to Britain.

When asked why they said

No 1 " Your government pay you not to work"

No 2 "You have free health care."

No 3 ."You get a pension."

If I'm not mistaken, I believe that you lived in India. Assuming that you are of British heritage, why did you chose to live there?

We might be a civilised country - but we have lots of cold wet weather, that would put anyone off coming here.

Are you talking about people from Pakistan or India? Those from Pakistan have built up a Brotherhood here in the UK and it is easy to make £millions from nothing because they have brothers in every related trade. Similar to the Turkish people - money comes easy when you have great accountants. Many from India come to Europe to escape the caste system. In India those of the lower castes remain as such throughout their lives, but here in the UK they can rise above that especially in the medical profession. Polish immigrants come here because we are far more lenient. Poland is basically a Catholic country and they are far stricter with e.g. illegal drug use - a large number of Polish people drink heavy and use illegal drugs, especially if they are working unsociable hours in the UK. In Poland if found using illegal drugs it means immediate jail time. Although publicly accepted, LGBT is in reality frowned upon. Many Polish who had to take out British Citizenship after Brexit - returned home because they would have had to pay full taxes, and also because the IR35 came in then. Lithuanians find it easier, they use the Roman alphabet as we do, but many have now returned back to Lithuania, because they could not settle here they preferred their own country. The Romanians, are here to work. The political situation is (laughably) more honest for them in the UK - apart from their accent, they fit in with the British easily and make far better neighbours than many British people. I like the Sikhs, they have a great sense of humour and are genuine and selfless.

Re. the bold section of your comment. How many times do you have to be told this untrue? Neither Poles nor any other EU citizen had to take British citizenship after Brexit. If EU citizens had lived in the UK for 5 years or more, they were given settled status and could stay for as long as they liked. Those who had lived there for under 5 years were given pre-settled status, and could apply for settled status when they reached the 5 year mark.

If they are considered resident for tax purposes, which they would be if they had been working in the UK for 6 months or more, they would be taxed in exactly the same way as British nationals.

I wasn't referring to you when I mentioned colonisation. That was directed at the defender of colonisation as being good for countries such as India, and an insult to our forebears if we criticised it.

Rather ironic considering that it came from someone who perceived membership of the EU meant Britain had lost her sovereignty. Yet considered that it was fine for us to physically take countries and use them for our gain. I wonder how they would feel if foreign boots suddenly landed on their soil, and took over Britain? It's morally wrong to take another country, and use its people and natural resources to amass wealth for the invader.
