Why would anyone be disgusted at being in the place they'd chosen to go to?

Pictures paint a thousand words have you not picked a Hotel out of a brochure on the strength of the photo's and like Southort's "top" hotels found something completely different on arrival.
There are some very nice looking guest houses in Southport but in the same street there are doss house like flats which I imagine at night provide an early hours of the morning unwanted cabaret.
We are in Holiday season now aren't we where you'd think attractions would be open Splashworld Closed Pleasureland open occasionally the "beach" apart from a few hundred yards of sand from the Pier South. North of the pier it is marsh as is Weld Rd to Ainsdale.
But of course the British Society of Empty Shops and Tat Purveyors get regular visits to their Lord St living Museum.
You wouldn't be annoyed at paying good money to visit the North West's answer to Beirut ?

No, never

That's why most people read TripAdvisor and look on Google Earth/Streetview before finalising a choice of hotel.
Perhaps reality differs from your imagination.

We are still under some covid restrictions & most people's concept of "holiday season" is the school holidays which are over a month away.

I thought that was Blackpool.
But assuming you mean Southport why do you still presumably live here if you think it's so bad? The place is packed every weekend and will be all summer so clearly it has plenty appeal for visitors.
Just because it's not exactly how you remember it in your dim and distant youth doesn't mean it's bad. But have a good summer being consumed by your own misery.

The irony of you taking it one step further, and paying good money to live here.

He is absolutely right! Southport has nothing now. It is supposed to be a sea side resort but that title has now gone to 'Ainsdale on Sea' There has been no money spent on Southport in regards to it's resort status, while money has been spent on Crosby, Bootle and the City centre from Liverpool's Joint Council expenditure.
How many tourists are going to be attracted to yet another 'Conference Centre'? or perhaps yet another 'Food Hall' such ridiculous expense when the money could have been spent on beach attractions. Make Southport attractive to tourists and tourists will come to Southport! Can anyone think of just one 'Wow!' factor that Southport has? The central Public Park is closed more often than not, no swimming baths in the area, nowhere for families to go - you can only walk along the prom so many times before getting bored. No shops, no interest features, no historical features have been maintained, no leisure interests, etc.,
Can anyone think of one idea that this Council has come up with that has improved the town?
Southport needs to break away from the Merseyside connection. It needs to go it alone so that all money raised is re-invested in the local area, and that needs to happen PDQ.

Yes, the ignorance displayed in your posts every day.
no swimming baths in the area
The swimming baths are open at Dunes Leisure Centre.
, nowhere for families to go
Yet it's packed with them every weekend and every school holiday.
Another miserable old git who can't cope with things not staying exactly as they were in 1960. Don't worry, life isn't eternal, you'll be out of your misery soon enough.

Less of the 'miserable old git' my friend - it is Mr. Miserable Old Git - to you.
Are you walking around with blinkers on? Live in a bubble do you? It is you who are remaining in the 1960's, and you do not appear to have noticed things have changed. Southport needs serious investment - it has stagnated! If Llandudno Council can address the needs of a resort successfully - why can't Sefton?

Millions have been spent on Southport, millions more in the pipeline as well. please let us know the which historical features haven't been maintained, there are plenty of shops, the Council cannot be blamed if they close down that is free enterprise. There are numerous Leisure Facilities, The Atkinson, Pleasureland, Dunes, the Pier, the beach, the Marine Lake many Restaurants serving cuisine from all around the world and many Parks & Gardens around the town all served by an excellent Park n Ride and many cheap Car Parks around the town.
