Grammar
They are now letting youngsters use text speak (m8 , l8r ) etc in exams and they are letting them pass with that kind of stuff.
Someone told me a few years ago that they found this allowance totally unnecessary and uncalled for and they even called teachers for pandering to children's inadequacies.
Teach them all to spell words properly and not to take these short cuts and we may get somewhere. I've noticed a lot of people claiming to be dyslexic too. I don't buy that for one single moment. Not everyone is dyslexic.

I agree with your comments regarding text speak!
However, I don't agree with the rest of what you write. In Norway, we have a prime minister who is dyslexic. That doesn't mean she isn't intelligent. I respect her 100 per cent. Anyone who is diagnosed with dyslexia is to be respected. Their problems with words doesn't limit their abilities.

I've tried to explain that I don't think grammar and punctuation are one and the same thing.
Derek H post #49
It is worth noting that the OP by Hector conflated grammar and punctuation inasmuch as "certain posters have chosen …to comment on another poster's 'incorrect' grammar" appears to allude to local's complaint that Derek H by punctuating local's posts was resented as tampering.
The quibble got out of hand in that neither chose to ignore the other. While it is true that this is small scale public forum and that informal language is fluid, perhaps the crux of the matter was that opinionated local regularly posts more-or-less lengthy, ambiguous and occasionally nonsensical diatribes which s/he appears to imagine are as meaningful to forum readers as they seem to be to her/himself.
Several threads on here have gone off topic because certain posters have chosen not to engage with the topic, but to comment on another poster's 'incorrect' grammar.
…Grammar police: Please try and understand the simple practical fact that usage of a living language may be inappropriate but it is never incorrect.

My sympathies are with Derek H. As well as I can recall without looking back, he focused on the other's punctuation — grammar came up incidentally, if at all. In that context the distinction is valid.
Of course, some posters thrive on contention. It hardly seems to matter that their posts are ambiguous. Indeed, perhaps ambiguity is a bonus in that you can argue 'black is white' and, when painted into a corner, argue otherwise. Stridency, vituperation, incongruity, overstatement and bluster are their stock-in-trade:
…Not only is the meaning of what is being said by the poster the grammar gestapo are criticising invariably clear, but it also demonstrates how limited their own understanding of language and its purpose actually is, and perhaps also how .although they have nothing of value to contribute to the topic, they want to say something even if it is, in the context of that particular thread, pointless and worthless.

Are you wondering if Hector & Said are one and the same? Or am I misinterpreting your post?
If it's the former, I can state with 100% certainty that they are not the same person. Hector joined SGB in 2003, but made very few posts. He also posted under another name and was a pretty active member. I interacted with him quite a lot back then, which is how Hector knew my real name and recently used it on the forum. He is also a friend of another Q member who he knew in the real world. Said has had many identities on here, but Hector ain't one of them!

Thank you for clearing that up, Sievad.
What I often find interesting about message boards is how posters want to sort out the 'socks' in the drawer. I suppose it's all part of the fun.
I know little about Said, other than that he very kindly provided me with a pdf of a doctoral thesis frpm 1978 by Kenneth Lunn that deals with anti-Semitism in British politics against the backdrop of the Marconi Affair. The quality of the thesis is astounding, especially when I compare it to those I have been involved with professionally over the years.

You misinterpret me on this occasion. I just note that Said and Hector both quote or refer to academic contacts when trying to underpin their claims. But as far as I can recall, never have I seen a link that substantiates these contacts etc.
The quality of the thesis is astounding, especially when I compare it to those I have been involved with professionally over the years is the latest example. Is he a professor? Surely nothing less than a Cambridge University Lecturer?

I have remained pretty constant on this,
If as an aside you feel the need to give your own version of my spelling, grammar or punctuation then fine.
To offer nothing else is the problem.
The thread is instantly stymied as our resident Rain Man sticks in the full stop.
To see that our enfont terrible agrees with him is not a surprise.

Just for once, a post from you that made me laugh.
