Fuel shortages
Another spectacular success.
If petrol stations decide to ration fuel this time, it should be based on a MINIMUM purchase, not a maximum.
Say 30 litres. If you can't get that in your car, you are charged for 30 anyway and the balance goes to charity.
I remember when we had the tanker drivers strike and people spent hours going from one petrol station to another, topping up all the time.

I thought the whole idea of rationing a product or service was to preserve levels.

I've noticed a lot of forecourts are constantly chokka with cars filling up today.....Not bothered myself tbh, I'm quite happy with my fleet having half-full tanks.

It is but what happens is people get hysterical and queue to put in two gallons where otherwise they would wait.
If they know they will have to pay for double what they take it will deter that behaviour.
To be fair, telling people there's plenty of fuel at the depots doesn't help. They are concerned about how much is at their local filling station.

The way most people use their cars for very short trips/non-essential travel, fuel is obviously too cheap anyway....Imo, the Govt should increase fuel duty, to keep the pump price at £2 per litre. Not only would this reduce demand, it would be good for the nations CO2 footprint and reduce both congestion and wear and tear of the roads. The extra cash could also help fund all those other things the Govt is strapped for cash for.

No shortage, but I bet panic buying will drive prices up.

We know you have an inbuilt hatred of cars and other vehicles (even though, as a hypocrite, you drive a high emissions van yourself), but you really haven't thought this one out, have you?
If such a price increase was introduced, the cost of living for a start would sky rocket and affect many, millions of people.
Secondly, the cost of supplying and delivering all types of food, drink, services would also rise sharply and, again, affect many, many millions of people, as almost invariably they are achieved using the roads system.
Add to that the cost of people's travel to and from work or other necessities would substantially rise; even more so for those who can't use public or other other transport because they work unsocial hours.
These very reasons are largely behind the current "panic" buying of fuel even though there is no actual shortage, other than that of delivery drivers, because people know what demands are on them to cover work and family duties.
But I guess that you won't be particularly bothered as your Utopia image of a world full of cycle and walking road markings and paths will always, in your case, shine through....

A) The business runs commercial vehicles, whereas I use my bikes/run an electric vehicle. Maybe best castigate owner-operator truckers first, for they burn way more fuel per mile/emit more CO2 than ours do.
B) Cost of living wouldn't suddenly 'skyrocket', not if it was done incrementally. E.g. 20p on a litre at each of three successive budgets.
C) That's a good plan tbh, use some of the cash raised to fund better cycle infrastructure.

I had to queue up for petrol yesterday, most of those in the queue were shoppers not commuters.. There is no petrol shortage! It is hard to believe that there is a shortage of lorry drivers because there were loads of lorries jamming up the narrow roads in Banks, Tarleton annd Chorley!
