Crosbys iconic boulder stone.
Never heard of it until today.
What is it and where did it come from?

There's one opp the pumping station, at side of the road from Plough roundabout into Banks. Probably are what's known as 'erratics', brought down from the North by glaciers during the last ice-age.

I was only a Secondary School scholar but I must have listened more intently than you during Geography, weren't you a KGV failure, the rock at Banks is called Moraine.

"erratics" is that another Barton Billy a figment of your vivid imagination.

I think you had better have a quick read up, glacial erratics can be part of glacial moraine, but moraines are formed along the sides of glaciers or at the end or melt point of a glacier.
Moraines will very often be seen as ridges of earth and stone which have been bulldozed out of the way, erratic boulders are simply boulders which have been carried from their point of origin.

It was unearthed in a field during 19thC excavations for building work, and placed on Moor Lane as an exhibit ... later moved to it's current place in Coronation Park.

Its a shame when facts spoil a discussion, but I suggest you read and understand what moraines are, there appearance etc and then the difference between a moraine and an erratic.
Face facts, the single large boulder we are talking about is an erratic, not a conglomeration of small and larger rocks as in a morrain

Yes, it's a shame that an accurate, factual post results in a personal attack.
It's also a shame that erratics are not more appreciated. I watched Sefton Council staff load the small one in South park in Bootle onto a trailer and take it away..presumably because it made the area 'untidy'.

No apology from me required, if anything you owe PNP an apology for such a rude response.
My comment and link are in response to your reply "erratics" is that another Barton Billy a figment of your vivid imagination. as you can see from the link erratic is the correct term used by PNP for the boulder stone at Crossens pumping station.
So your apology to PNP awaits, should he wish to accept it.

Large boulders can be part of a moraine, but a single large boulder is not a moraine.
Moraines are easily identifiable. Your description of a moraine was taken from Wikipedia. The full description being: " A moraine is any glacially formed glacial accumulation of unconsolidated glacial debris (regolith and rock) that occurs in both currently and formerly glaciated regions on Earth (i.e. a past glacial maximum), through geomorphological processes." Note the word “accumulation”
Surely you scrolled down and saw some of the images of moraines?

Who is around to prove that the large boulder was deposited exactly where it now stands? Unless someone rolled it down from The Lake District on tree trunks to put as a nice feature in Banks. Is it or is it not a Large Boulder, is it or is it not down here as a result of Glacial Movement or Moraine.
