West Lancashire MP Rosie Cooper has joined with the National Caravan Council to oppose the Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) on Motorhomes.
Due to a technicality under EU emission regulations, new motorhomes will no longer be taxed as Private/Light Goods Vehicles (PLG/PHG) but instead as a car for the purposes of VED; new owners now face up to a 705% increase, rising from £265 to £2,135 with significantly higher ongoing yearly tax costs for a further five years.
Rosie Cooper MP has called on the Treasury to reclassify motorhomes as commercial vehicles for the purposes of VED at the next budget.
She said: “The impact this drastic increase in tax will have on the motorhome industry is huge, from discouraging people from buying them and the knock-on effects for jobs in sales and manufacturing, to the reduction in users contributing to tourism around the country.
“I have called on the Chancellor to look at this recent change and make provision in the upcoming budget to allow for motorhomes to be taxed as previously and support the motorhome industry.” NCC Director General, John Lally, said following Questions in Parliament:
“Minister, Simon Clarke MP, recognised the concerns of the motorhome industry, saying VED ‘remains under review’, with any announcements for change to be made at the new Budget (11 March 2020). The Treasury Minister has also agreed to meet again with MPs and the NCC.
“NCC will continue to press the Chancellor to stop taxing new motorhomes and campervans as cars. These vehicles are not cars and should not be taxed as such. We urge the Chancellor to make this urgent amendment to the VED taxation bands in the forthcoming Budget process.”
According to the UK Caravan and Camping Alliance, motorhome and caravan owners make a key contribution to the economy in onsite and off-site spend, helping to bring the value of this sector of domestic tourism to a total worth of £9.3bn.
For multiple reasons I would love to see these vehicles taxed off the roads. Firstly and most simply they are more often than not in the hands of the most incompetent drivers, leading to bad tempers and frustration amongst other road users. They are a blight on the landscape, often being parked for long periods in our most beautiful wild places, depriving other road users of scarce parking places. Often they congregate at sporting events; for example, they arrive days in advance to view key stages of the Tour de France, the mess they leave has to be seen to be believed. Volunteers clear tons of detritus after they depart. There is little or no benefit for the local economy as most bring everything they need with them. Their owners are sold the dream of the freedom of the road, their dream fuels the nightmare of others. Two thousand pounds extra on the price of a sixty-five thousand pound motor-home is a small price to pay for the negative impact these things will have on the environment.

You are, of course, entitled to your uninformed opinion. I am entitled to my opinion that you are talking a load of rubbish.
I seem to recall that a German chancellor also wanted get rid of people didn't approve of.
Tolerance my friend... Tolerance and Diversity.
If the UK doesn't tax them, perhaps the E.U will. What a wonderful celebration of Brexit, taxing the thousands of motor-homes who invade Europe every summer ! Two thousand euros on the spot or you're immobilized !
I won't comment on your comparison with a certain German dictator, it's even more inane than Badman's "tit" !

If you don't like motor homes fine.
I don't like football but I don't want supporters charged £1000 to watch a match because some of them drop rubbish or cause traffic jams on match days.
Like I said "Tolerance my friend... Tolerance and Diversity."
