re: Anon's post #81:
Mark Cunningham, owner of Anthony James Estate Agents on Hoghton Street in Southport, said:
It is a disproportionate action that will have little result in its primary object to encourage cyclists.
It's true:
- pop-up cycle lanes will cause dislocation,
- fearful cyclists from the residential periphery will not be reassured in large numbers,
- households on the streets in question will experience inconvenience, and
- businesses must prepare contingencies.
The Council has indicated Emergency Active Travel Routes will be subject to review. The scheme was devised and promoted by central government, panicked it seems by the massive disruption of virus restrictions, not least the necessity to social distance on buses and trains. Businesses of all descriptions are taking a hit from Covid-19 centrally mandated restrictions. These are not normal times and the Council is faced with only unwelcome choices. It was Westminster that dictated the quick timing (and dearth of consultation) of this measure.
It is regrettable certainly for business proprietors, that this massive disruption occurred without advance notice. But the fact remains that we are faced with considerations as diverse as poor air quality, an unsustainable level of unfitness in the population as well as (notably in Southport) global climate change which is predicted to put our town below sea level in a generation, or so. Southport no less than the rest must change to meet these challenges. It will be unsettling, all around.

On the other hand if you have too much to carry safely, then of course other alternatives will still be available.

As an alternative/or in addition, there's always those handy lightweight child 'trailers', that tow behind the bike. These hook-on hook-off easily, as and when required. 4 or 5 full 'Tesco' bags would fit in a trailer safely.
Suggest Google: 'cycle panniers' and 'bike trailers' for pics of above items....Buying from a bike shop has the advantage that they will fit the items for you..
Why not just get a camel instead.

No problem with panniers i have a pushchair in one and my grandma in the other she loves it.
Going to get a wood-burning stove for the winter she's a bit arthritic.
The kids are whining a bit but you can't win them all.
