Face masks - yes or no?
As I see it there are two types, the flat pleated surgical type and the cone shaped filter masks.
The surgical type will yes help you to stop spreading the virus, not completely, but will help. Of course if you have the virus you shouldn't be out anyway, but if you have it and show no symptoms, it will to some extent stop the spread from a cough.
Having said that, this type does not seal your nose and mouth, so no point in wearing one in an attempt to protect yourself from the virus
The other type, the cone face fitting type will work to help prevent you catching it, but it has to be a certified specific type, a dust type mask is no good, it will allow the virus to enter, N95 seem to be the ones to have, as long as its a genuine N95!
Also, not forgetting there are 'rules' and how to wear them and take them off, washing hands, not touching the mask and then your face etc.
So, its not as simple as it seems this mask wearing saga !

If a mask totally sealed your nose and mouth, you wouldn't be able to breathe, so moisture droplets containing the virus can still get through, either in or out.
The only 'benefit' of masks is that they might give the wearers a sense that they are protected and thus reduce their stress levels, but this is counter-productive if it makes them ignore social distancing.
If people want to wear them, fine, but not at the expense of social distancing.

????
If that were the case, then how do health workers etc breath, and why wear a mask at all IF the virus can get through ?

Yes.
We wear a mask out makes us feel better with social distancing.
We use cloth cycle masks wash after each journey out of the house.
I tried a homemade mask though without a nose flap to breathe it was pretty uncomfortable and steamed up my sunglasses.
I wear sunglasses out at all times to protect my eyes from the high pollen count and remind me not to touch them.
In all the time I have been out under lockdown never had any one cough or sneeze near me.
The biggest threat is 'touch' infection on the hands to the face so wearing a mask is more comforting to me as a reminder.

Through a filter.

Having lived and travelled in SE Asia for a quarter of a century I saw mask wearing appear as an individual anti pollution measure. When SARS appeared it did increase and soon the asian wish not to appear ”different” when in a likeminded group meant that, for instance, tour groups exited Auckland airport into NZ’s clear blue skies and sparsely populated countryside all wearing paper masks!
Then came Covid-19 and herd signalling. The interpretation became that NOT wearing a mask showed disrespect for those around you to the extent that Hong Kong’s Chief Executive Carrie Lam was pilloried into wearing one - against her better judgement
So, to my mind it is largely a social rather than a medical need that drives “masking up”
Social distancing should suffice and social media questioned

Not at all, the ONLY solution to this and any other lethal virus is a vaccine, no matter what you do to prevent breathing it in or out, or touching something, the virus still exists out there. This is why there is a LOT of reluctance to relax lockdown measures.

Ask yourselves this. . . .
If you were to go into a room wearing a paper or homemade mask and then sprayed air freshener around the room, would the mask stop you smelling it?
I doubt it, and as you can see the water droplets from the spray which are relatively large compared to Covid-19 particles, it's unlikely a paper or homemade mask would prevent you inhaling the smaller Covid droplets.
I think masks are helpful in preventing the spread of coughed or sneezed droplets from you, but not much good stopping those already in the air from being inhaled. However, if it makes you feel better, what harm does it do !!!

I've worn both types. When I've been in a shop. The FFP3s are reusable, so I just leave those for a few weeks. As we know, the virus is extremely fragile outside the body, so I figure if I leave it long enough, if there was any virus on there it would be long dead. They aren't that easy to breathe through, so I wouldn't like to wear one for any length of time.
The surgical masks are probably past their use by date, but I did have a cough a few weeks ago, so I wore those so I didn't pass anything on, and I didn't frighten anyone by coughing near them.
I think I'd feel better if we all wore masks. I've noticed a lot of people wearing them now. While they may not be hugely effective, I feel it's better than nothing. If only, like I did, to stop my cough travelling any distance. And it does remind me not to touch my face. Since this outbreak, I've noticed I do a fair impression of Edvard Munch's 'The Scream'.

I rarely disagree with you, but on this occasion I will!
Masks, as we know, are of very limited effectiveness, and I think they give some people the false 'assurance' that they are protected from the virus, which will make them sloppy about social distancing.

There is also a small danger that any virus on the mask will build up and live longer or be subsequently inhaled.

Well - I am about to don a face mask today. I have to do some sanding with an electrical sander.
Anyway, if a fart can get through boxers and a pair of jeans, what makes you think a mask is more effective against a virus!
