Watching Greta Thunberg address the US Congress this week was inspiring. A wee slip of a girl, quietly speaking the truths that many in the US won't acknowledge. How any one of them could fail to be moved by her heartfelt plea is beyond me. I certainly was.
That's a bit sexist.

Yes I do realise that they are not withdrawing their paid labour.
Point is by protesting on a school day they are sending the message that the future of of the planet is more important than a day's formal education and that education wouldn't be much use on a dead planet.
Protesting on a weekend lessens the impact even if there were greater numbers.

Oh, give over!
The uncomfortable truth is that a child with issues, perhaps because of those issues, has shamed those who will not act on climate change. I believe she is home-schooled so this will be a valuable education for her.
I cannot understand anyone who sees the efforts of young people as anything but laudible. Don't they remember the youth who protested the Vietnam war or the atom bomb. Just like them, the youth of today have a vested interest in this issue. Those who cannot,or will not accept the problem should get out of the way and let those who will be hit the most call the shots.
Oh poor you, you might have to give up flying or your gas guzzling car. The irony is that if we tackle climate change now there is less liklihood of you losing your precious boiler. And it's not an either/or situation.... you can not buy teak furniture as well as other things.

Not surprised at all. Whilst looking at electric cars around 6 months ago, the list of charging points locally included a couple of private houses.
According to a map, there's one outside the Ramada, but I've never noticed it. Can't see anyone being happy if you've got to park up there for hours to use it either.
Not sure the technology is advanced enough for the average person. When charging a battery speeds up by a good few hours, maybe.
Shame really, as I reckon with the infrastructure, we'd have unlimited renewable energy through wind and wave power.

^^^ this.
She is inspirational. And perhaps it took a youngster to speak to other youngsters. To see that climate change isn't just something that adults talk down to them about. And yes, even shame adults into action.

How do you know she isn't being educated? As far as her 'condition' is concerned, she doesn't seem to have any problem communicating clearly and concisely and with a passion that is to be admired. There were literally millions and millions of people across the world protesting. Some of whom, such as the Solomon Islands, are right at the sticky end of climate change. Are they all brainwashed?

That's an excellent suggestion. It's only part of the problem , but it really is a good start.

Yes, also ageist and racist. Electric transportation
All new build housing has to have electric vehicle charging points. How long does it take to charge a car. Say house is a 3 car family. What is the range on a car in mileage? If you run out and have to charge elsewhere as in travelling long distance in your job. Does your employees pay you to sit at a charging point a distance from home. It’s not going to happen battery only. The future surely must be hybrid with a small size engine 49cc or what ever driving some sort of charging device/ Alternator etc. To be viable to anyone? Then you have the cost of battery’s plus untested life span of battery’s. Retraining vehicle technicians/ mechanics etc. Bring back diesels. Who’s kidding who. Big abuse of grants for green cause. It’s not viable. What’s everybody else’s opinion. Think about it long term you by a vehicle then a few years later it’s scrap. No resale value what do you do. Only my opinion from someone not associated at all with motor trade. But need to keep mobile. Don’t want a walk back from weekly shop with carrier bag fingers as car won’t charge. Will I be able to buy one cheap at Lidl or use there non delivery service (ha)

Electric vehicles
Only my uneducated opinions. Didn’t they bring out a source of vehicle propulsion in the 70s powered by H2 0/ hydrogen etc. The oil companies bought the patents to stop it being developed. Or was that just a conspiracy rumour, lots of them about? This is going to be a big earner in years to come. There is a place on Duke street by the Dukes folly hotel that is an agent/leader in electric vehicle charging power points domestic and commercial. Might be worth looking up.Can you imagine getting your family’s / business vehicle fuel bill on a quarterly basis instead of pay as you go. Wow that’s a big bill. Its what will happen if things change or go hybrid at least. Or stay same?? Only saying ?

A) Makes good sense to have one fitted, particularly if these new houses are also required to have solar panels.
B) Let an electric taxi take the strain then. They would be well charged-up in advance, if all taxi ranks had charging points.

climate change is cyclical .its just we never had the techy to monitor it back then .1500s to 17oos we enjoyed climate like Italy ,and had vineyards to show, everyone used fossil woods for heating and cooking and production of lifes essentials along with cols, and peats.our bigger problem is recent plastics and its covered up hazards.why arnt they saying to its producers stop now, instead their saying the consumer pays to use it ,not its producers,so its use and production continues at a bigger profit margin.then thers bse crisis that suddenly passed by.the food industrys biggest impact, and potential for major lawsuits.then it goes away ,and now we have unprecedented levels of labelled alzhiemers epidemics.you cant tll the difference until autopsy examination.imagine the corporate compensation if its facts wernt distorted.rainforests were once massively settled by the incas and didn't exist in its current form ,the soils sublayer is very insubstantial, and has come about through the demise of its previous generations of human existence.there are major issues in play true ,but their not addressing those major ones that are in the backdoor profitmaking industries ,and purveying a different picture whilst still maintaining a buck to be made.

I've always wondered if electric cars have alternators, but never bothered to find out. On the principal that an alternator charges the battery. Apparently, having just Googled, alternators don't work efficiently enough, so the power used having one doesn't make enough charge for them to be worth it. As someone put it, an alternator attached to a wheel would mean you need much more power to turn that wheel.
Or something. I think.
I think hybrids, as you say, are the most practical option for the foreseeable. I suppose the bottom line is investment. A government that may only be in power for 5 years, or 2, or possibly (at the moment) a few months, just won't make that initial plunge with public money.
Carbon based fuel is so precarious nowadays, with the price of fuel rocketing at any given second, depending on who is chucking bombs around in the middle east. Renewables are just, well renewable.
Plus the Ormskirk tidal lagoon should be quite a feature in 30 years

A) For the average persons commute/shopping trip/school run etc, the range of one charge is more than enough....For someone who regularly does high-mileage trips, a hybrid car (e.g. with small on-board hydrogen engine would be better suited.
B) The UK has a massive untapped potential in tidal energy. The seas around Britain experience some of the worlds biggest tides. Barrages across all major river estuaries, would produce a huge amount of non-polluting power. Ideal solution to fill an energy gap created by moving over to electric traction.

For someone who pedals forest destroying, lung clogging, super polluting stoves I thought you might keep your head down on such a thread.

I remember a good few years ago an article on the NW news about a bloke who had a Ford Anglia runing on water, I think he was from Birkdale, the rumour was after that that BP had bought him out.

I think the Ramada one is underneath, there are also several types of charging point on the market with several different power levels. I perused the EV market and found it very confusing, some manufacturers claim a reasonable range but the costs don't stack up, I also came across a story about company car drivers who were getting tax breaks by having a hybrid vehicle and at the end of the lease the vehicle was being returned with the charging cable all neatly wraped up in the original packaging.
