Whaley Bridge Evacuation
Feel sorry for those poor people - I would not like to be evacuated from my home. Hope it will not be for long.
On that topic - given just minutes to evacuate, what would you take with you?

Not at all! A misfortune is what it is - there is nothing one can do to change it and sobbing is not going to help the situation - so the best way to overcome it - is to treat it light heartedly.
Still, if you are a doomsayer - I can understand your point of view, though I doubt if many in Australia would enjoy your company.

Now I understand why so many of you watch television. The dismal and miserable portrayal of life in the programmes suits you. Have you been down to Whaley Bridge to offer help? I have! A few people were joking about living on the wrong side of the lake, or wondering why their house had been so cheap to buy - but most are worried about leaving their homes and what they will find on return
If you were in that position - seriously - would you be sitting on your front door step crying? Or would you jut get on with making the best you can out of it. I would be first considering about my house insurance cover, then ensuring my house is safe and well locked up and then joining my neighbours, I would be moving on out as required. What would I take with me - nothing really. My own well being is more valuable than anything I own.
Would I care what other people are discussing about the situation? Absolutely not! I would be too busy with my own affairs, and they are not the same as other people's affairs.
The British people are known for resilience and sardonic humour - just as they are at Whaley Bridge!

I had no idea the structure of the Victorian type design of Reservoir was
considered a worry.
I hope the decision to be rebuild the Dam go's ahead rather than repair.
Plus there should be a ban on building Schools in the path of man made catastrophe scenario's.
Never forget Aberfan.

Oh dear, Said, the 'moaners and groaners' of this forum are at it again, bless 'em. Good on you for going down to Whaley Bridge and offering a hand to help out
You may find this a little odd but I always have, what I like to call, my Go-Bag at the ready. It is a large hold-all bag and in that I have every I would need if I had to suddenly take off. Material belongings are mostly not important to me. I would only take one small object that has a great sentimental value and that's it.
As for the reality of what is going on in Derbyshire, I wish all the people that are effected the very best and I can only hope, like them, that the dam does not give way.

I assume then you would have already made arrangements for your family.

They are not stupid! They would not want me to hold their hand, they would see that as an insult!

It is not the first time that dam has weakened, so there would not be many who would be surprised. About thirty years ago, the basin had cracked and was leaking water into the underlying mines. That had to be repaired. As it is, they have managed to reduce the water levels in the reservoir, and have shored up the damage with sand bags and rubble - hopefully it will soon be repaired and the people will be allowed home. Some people are with friends and family, while hotels in the area have also taken some people in.
I would not go so far as to have a bag ready - but I do have all I need to hand like money and car keys. I would most likely take my insurance certificate though.
