Well, I can say it works well enough for me and other bike users. Works well in NL too, where even supermarket fronts are crowded with parked bikes.....Though if you're regularly needing to hang stuff from the handlebars, it would be worth getting an inexpensive kiddie tow-along trailer to increase capacity.

Beyond that, there are capacious purpose-built cargo trikes, that businesses (e.g. in NL) use for home deliveries..... Link: www.babboe.co.uk

Will you ever get it through your head that bike users are not the only ones using the roads? I know in your little restrictive world that would be ideal, but just occasionally reality must take over.

As far as i am aware they are all to be quiet streets. These DO NOT allow through traffic. Why do you think the businesses on Shakespeare St are all against it if traffic is allowed through? The areas are; Eastbank St (although all maps say that it is Scarisbrick New Rd) Scarisbrick New Rd (up to Cemetery Rd) Duke St and Lord St from the Junction of Eastbank St.

    That's an interesting point.

When we bought the house we were told it was Talbot Street, and our neighbours think it is too. In the Belmont-Aughton Road stretch.

but the deeds to our house ( built about 1898) call it Hollybrook Cottage.
And we noticed that when you turn into the road from Aughton Road the sign says "Hollybrook".

Then a few years ago I was told this. Talbot Street used to be a cul-de-sac and facing its end was Hollybrook. Talbot was in Southport and Hollybrook was Birkdale. Between them was a brook-Hollybrook.

At some point the brook was culverted, and the roads joined! It still confuses Google Earth.

When we were first here I asked a guy doing some work for us whether we were in Southport or Birkdale. His answer was that of we were selling it was Birkdale and if we were buying it was Southport.

    And don't cyclists know it!

Since my younger days, I've seen cyclists steadily squeezed out by the ever-increasing volume of motor traffic on our roads....Even back lanes are busy now, as cars switch onto them to avoid overcrowded main routes.

These 'quieter streets' proposals are a very welcome move, which will help to redress the one-sided balance between car and bike....

Perhaps you should read the information again and digest it properly. The proposals for quiet streets is the area bounded by those roads. ie the quiet streets will be within the boundary of that area. It doesn't mean that the main roads that form the boundary will be the quiet streets.

The problem with so many of these schemes is simple, sure reduce access to motorised traffic and the area will become quieter, but like it or not car users will simply go elsewhere taking people and their custom away, will the cyclists and pedestrians replace that trade? I for one very much doubt it.

Business will simply continue to move out of town centres were possible, this is already happening, restrictions will simply speed up the process, still the cyclists will be happy, possibly.

As a side note, like so many I have reduced journeys of any sort at the moment, however last weekend went to the Hoghton St clinic for the vaccination, plenty of cars about, in my brief time in the area didn’t see the slightest sign of a cyclist. Yet a good proportion of the road is given over to cyclists, sounds practical, or perhaps not.

It is fair to say that numerous contemporary policy initiatives favour encouragement of alternatives to private vehicle journeys. They are national is scope, so where will these motorists go?

Southport's visitor economy benefits from a pleasant environment wherein the town's guests enjoy leisurely shopping and recreational activities. Residents, too, value these perquisites. It is time to recognize that these policies are not the tabloid WAR ON MOTORISTS, but rather a positive development.

The day he says something sensible will be the day that the Sahara desert becomes an alpine skiing resort.
He has posted nothing but drivel since he came on here so I suppose he is consistent if nothing else.

Everybody seems to ignore the fact that the town has an excellent Park N Ride, for ÂŁ2 you can park all day and ride into town, be dropped off and picked up at any bus stop en route as many times as you want, what could be better?

That's what they get with PnR and no worries about overstaying. The idea of parking right outside the shop are a figment of imagination, 90% of people park on a carpark then have to walk to the shop then to the next and so on then walk back to the car. What could be easier than hopping back on the bus and getting off further along or going back to the car to drop off shopping then back to where ever you want?
