'Southport Against Cycle Lane Expansion' facebook group has over 700 members and were delighted with the news from Sefton Council yesterday that the current proposals were being put on hold.

Some of the reactions were:

Round 1 won. The fight isn't over. We need to make sure we are listened to and only truly beneficial schemes get approval. Also the government didn't force any council to enact hare-brained schemes in the first lockdown, it merely made funding available where needed. Disingenuous politicking from Fairclough again.

Excellent news however pressure needs to be exerted to remove the temporary cycle lanes on Hoghton street, Queens road and reintroduce a pedestrian only Chapel street.

That is good news, very good news. like most people here I don’t trust, Sefton Council, and in particular Mr Fairclough. Thank you to Thomas de Freitas and Sinclair Hesketh d'Albuquerque and everyone involved. People Power!

Also I find it strange that Cllr Fairclough says in the article that there was a 'robust consultation process', when only a couple of months ago he said that it had been 'hijacked'...

this is great news but because there was no consultation process involving this area I sincerely hope this doesn’t get approved through’ the back door’ . We had a meeting with Transport Planning , they said they would
Consult all those affected before a decision was made in the New Year . Meaning all the businesses the school and the church and the residents . I have now asked Cllr Fairclough and the Transport Planning Dept where that process is up to and how it will be implemented . I have also invited Cllr Fairclough to meet with the stake holders . He hasn’t replied to any of my emails and the Transport Planning say they havent a date for the process yet but it will happen .
Well if that’s true then get on with it and be prepared to hear some home truths on the danger you , the council , have caused to children, parents, the elderly and the residents . In the last few months a child has almost been run over by a bus , a cyclist had severe injuries caused by the lanes as did an elderly woman who fractured her face tripping over the grey hazards . I think your risk assessment is complete Cllr Fairclough - just admit it and remove the hazardous lanes !

This is not the end, do not be complacent. This is just the first battle in a war, the enemy has retreated but is not defeated.

In the meantime, I and many other cyclists will be making full use of the shared spaces these 700 members are obviously happy to continue with. We will be making full use of our rights under the amended Highway Code (coming into force this month) to use the full lane, we will take our higher priority over drivers to go about our business…all of course without any anger or hatred or danger … as we have priority over you and your license can be revoked.

We will video record our journeys and will submit video evidence of any indiscretions by drivers who don’t follow the rules and put us in danger. My life is not worth your license.

This is what you want. This is what you have fought for. Watch out, cos we will be recording YOU.

Pressure needs exerting to 'reintroduce a pedestrian only Chapel Street'?

Tbh, I'm surprised this daft lot aren't clamouring to scrap pedestrianisation completely
and turn Chapel Street back into a two or three lane highway - duh!

The 700 I refer to is the Bookface group, PNP is referring to a different group - do keep up.
700 of 91,000 is a very small proportion…..not a massive majority you claim…
