I think the saddest post I've ever read, I can't even begin to imagine the pain you, your sister and brother have been through over the years. For children of such tender years to lose their mother in such a cruel and horrific manner is just unimaginable.
I echo Tattyboo's sentiments and hope that with modern DNA Techniques the evil person who commited this terrible crime can at last be caught and put in prison for the rest of their days where they surely belong.
I'm sure that even after all these years it would help you to find peace and draw a line under this tragic event knowing your family had at last recieved some measure of justice, I wish you well.

When I started this thread, back in 2005, I never thought (and I should have done) that relatives of the murder victims would see it. I thought it would remain tucked away in an obscure corner of the forum. Obviously, I was wrong. I can only apologise to you, RUSS, if this thread has caused you and your family any distress - and the same goes for any other victims' relatives.
Like the good sergeant and Tattyboo, I hope that your mother's murderer is caught soon and brought to justice. I actually remember meeting your mum once. She was a really nice lady. I'm glad that Merseyside police are re-examining the evidence in this case;let's hope they are successful.
I also hope that the other murderers can still be caught. An unsolved murder must be the foulest injustice known to mankind.

i agree with everything Jonesy said, it's obviously something you will never get over, but with modern D.N.A technology there is always hope that these evil people will be caught.

Isobel Wilson
Thank you for your messages.
The person who murdered my mother was my father - Derek Wilson, who was estranged to her at the time.
We still saw him every week.
He managed to obtain a late alibi in his case and was released in his trial. He later married this false witness and she became our second mother.
The police contacted us five years ago and reviewed the case
with new technology and were ready to send it to the CPS.
Fortunately for my father he was terminally ill at the time and died earlier this year.
We will always remember our mother and I visit her twice a year in Southport as I now live on the south coast.
No matter how much pain you feel - you cannot act on revenge.
I believe that you reap what you sow in life and my children and family are very happy.

What a sad story, I am glad that it has a relatively happy ending and you have managed to make a new life for yourself and to have a lovely family too.
Good Luck for your future and that of your family.

My God Russ, this has to be the most dramatic thread ever to appear on this forum. What an awful time you and your siblings must have endured knowing the situation with your father and his 'false witness wife." It is amazing that you have turned out to be such a happy and well adjusted person and it speaks volumes for your character. I can only wish you a long and contented life and offer my congratulations on your fortitude.

I recall working at the Lucky 7 Bingo Club in the evenings for a while (when my kids were growing up) and the 'girlfriend' worked there then. She was quite proud of the fact that she was going out with Derek Wilson and I presume this was his alibi and the lady he subsequently married. As can be imagined, given the circumstances, she was far from popular at the time but it didn't appear to faze her and she seemed to revel in it all.

Hi Russ,
Sorry to be so graphic. At the time I was privy to the information and was merely satifying a query in the forum. My dates were out, and New Year's Day 1971 is quite right. I was astonished (but not surprised) that you identified your father as the perpetrator.
If you would like any further information please send me a private message.
Best wishes and sincere condolences

I have been trying to find out details of this case for some time now. I was unsure how to go about getting information. I have only just picked up this thread.
I was about 10/11 years old at the time of the murder and remember quite vividly being in the pie shop with my mother in Bridge St when Mr Griffiths body was brought out of the house. I felt a little scared at the time and I also remember the police coming to our house as they did to all the surrounding houses to take statements from everyone.
My sister was working at the Odeon cinema at the time she worked in the evenings as an extra job to her daytime job, I remeber she sold hot dogs in the foyer and my brother used to go to meet her out of work to walk her home. It seems that they probably passsed the house at about the time the police think the crime was commited they were interviiewd by the police but my brother and sister neither heard nor saw anything out of the ordinary.
The police searched all of the gardens and bins looking for a murder weapon as the old gentleman was bludgened to death and as I remember money was strewn about on the floor but it was just small change. I don't know if anything was taken, locals said that he used to hide his money behind the sweet jars in the shop and that he had just a few pounds on him when he went home that night, how true this is I have no idea but I think it was reported that they lay in wait for him coming home and battered him to death.
I do remember he was quite a petite man and appeared quite frail I don't know how old he was but to me he seemed very old. I used to go into his shop regularly for sweets. Lime fruit and liquorice and limejuice and soda were my favourites and he knew when I came in just what I wanted, it was always 2 oz because that was all I could afford.
If anyone has any information about the case I would love to know, or if anyone can tell me how to access the new archives or police archives I would appreciate any help. I cannot remember if anyone was ever a suspect I do know the crime was never solved.
The sad event happened at a time when everyone knew everyone in Southport. There were many rumours among the general crowd, that the crime had been carried out by a couple known to them. A man and a woman, though the couple did not hang around much the main group. I do know that after this cowardly crime there was not one of the group ever spoke to them again - which was rather strong if it had been just suspicion. Not long after, the couple moved out of Southport but returned later I think in the eighties during which they were found guilty of fraud after running some type of scam. Nobody could speak up about it because there was no actual proof - but as I understand it, the couple had admitted to it verbally to someone.

I was 11 at the time and lived in Southbank Rd. I may be wrong but I think it was on the odd numbers side between Southbank Rd and Portland St.
