British premier stage adaptation comes home to Southport On Saturday 1st December, Southport will play host to the British premier tour of Thomas Hardy’s classic novel ‘A Pair of Blue Eyes.’ This rare theatrical event is to be performed at Southport College theatre by Southport-based theatre company Rubaduk Productions. This show will be the final leg of a tour that has taken in places such as Liverpool, Wigan and St Helens.
Set in the 1870s, the play tells the story of the beautiful Elfride Swancourt who has lived a life of seclusion in a small Cornish village until the arrival of two strangers shatters that peace and tranquillity forever. Comic and tragic in equal measures, a tale of human fragility unfolds as Elfride is carried away by forces beyond her control.
‘A Pair of Blue Eyes,’ serialised between 1872-73, was Hardy’s third published novel and proved an immediate success for the young up and coming author. Indeed, the term ‘cliffhanger’ originates from one of the novel’s many moments of suspense.
Artistic Director, David Sedgwick said “A Pair of Blue Eyes is Hardy’s most biographical novel and his most emotionally charged work. The play deals with ideas we are all familiar with – love, jealousy and betrayal. ‘Blue Eyes’ is a great story with great characters – if you are a fan of Downton Abbey or if you love a great story then don’t miss it.” The performance starts at 7.45 pm and all tickets are on offer at the special price of only £5.
