Southport BID has announced an amazing coup in the ever-intense battle between North West coastal resorts to increase day visitor numbers.
Stung by Morecambe's recruitment last week of Labour's Jeremy Corbyn to head the bay town's new campaign: "Morecambe - The Greatest if You're Not Wise", the Southport business leaders have gone one better.
For an as-yet-unpublished fee, the Southport BID have picked up the services of Prime Minister Theresa May to promote the image of the town centre.
Mrs May has apparently promised the BID six hours per week exclusive time to promote Southport's new niche visitor strategy. In a bid to get visitors from parts "other resorts cannot reach", Southport is going all out to increase the town's growing Street Drinking Scene, creating a virtue from what might previously have been seen as a blemish on the town's reputation.. BID spokesman Arnie Rimmer said:"A group of business leaders came together in a brainstorming session and saw the potential. There is chance to expand a niche market where the numbers will potentially explode. Southport is already one step ahead in the Street Drinking market and we thought: "Why not go with the flow?"
"Mrs May's agent has negotiated with us the exclusive use of her services one day per week to promote the town's new image around the world from the moment that she steps down as Prime Minister."
Because of the political sensitivity," Mr Rimmer said, "the BID is unable to say precisely when the contract would be commencing."
But he gives the strongest hint to the town's traders, who are funding this through their BID levy, that there would not be too long to wait.
