Debenhams
Debenhams will announce their latest plan to prevent the inevitable
on Thursday announcing they will close 20 stores.Effective after Christmas.
I can't believe they won't include Southport.
I'd guess the staff are being told today or tomorrow

Not a complete shock but the Southport store IS on the list.

I'm not particularly a fan of Mike Ashley, but something fishy has been going on here:

There are plenty of these buildings around they have too many overheads, they cost a fortune in heating, lighting and maintenance, the layouts to are often inefficient that is why retailers find the purpose built units on retail parks so attractive. The only solution is to break them down to more manageable size but there are still too many of those or find other uses, the upper floors could be changed to housing for instance.

Didn't miss it at all you might have gathered from my post that I was being somewhat sarcastic.

I think that's the only way to rejuvenate the high street. Re-purpose the upper floors of these premises as residential and convince young professionals that they are the warehouse conversions of the 21st century so tres desirable. Then you have a captive market for the shops right in and amongst them. Would also cut down on commuter miles, congestion and pollution.
I'm only happy when it rains....

Shopping habits have changed, with many of us shopping on line, but, Sefton Council should take at least some of the blame for the general decline of Southport as a place to shop. The pedestrianisation of Chapel Street, Dickensian parking regimes and over zealous Enforcement Officers, have done absolutely nothing to encourage people to shop in this once lovely Town Centre.

The town centre over-extended when retail was profitable and a contraction is needed.
That is easier said than done.
Blaming Sefton Council employees is pointless they are completely out of their depth, they can't even organise bin emptying rotas.
