Another charity shop
Seems like we are getting another charity shop where argos used to be, how many do we need in this town, it’s becoming a complete joke.

I agree to a point , but it's better than an empty shop unit .
REST IN PEACE THE 96.

We now have a charity shop on chapel street, I thought that was bad enough myself but having one we’re argos used to be is unacceptable.
We don’t want empty shops I get that but it doesn’t mean we should have a charity shop so it’s not an emptied building.
We should be getting shops that will bring people to the town, we shouldn’t be standing for this.

Here's an idea !
Close ALL the Charity shops, and relocate them inside the soon to become vacant Debenhams store, after all 'one-stop' shopping seems to be the norm these days

I’m speechless, having a charity shop we’re argos used to be is a disgrace for not only Lord Street but for our town.
How can we attract new businesses to the town when all we seem to be getting now is charity shops, something needs to be done.

Sweet charity!
Empty shops are charged business rates, whereas charity shops have an exemption. So landlords are more than happy to let a charity use empty premises, as it saves them quite a packet. But will soon kick a charity out, if they have a paying tenant waiting.

How many of you complaining actually usd these shops instead of shopping online? Ask yourselves when you last went and purchased from any of these stores that are closing down.
B&M has parking for a couple of hours for a quid and is normally empty nowadays. Morrisons and Oceann Plaza are also free for a couple of hours and not that far to walk - laziness is the reason shops are closing, nothing else!

Last few times I went to Debenham’s there was very limited stock in women’s clothes. I have just bought two tops from them, online. There was a choice of over 6000 styles.

No what’s closing shops down is the rates and greedy landlords
The charity shops are ruining our town.

"The charity shops are ruining our town." That's a little unfair.
I do agree with you on rates, and who sets them?...

Perhaps the poorer people become, the more need there is for charity shops. I can't say I'm doing cartwheels about it, but it's better than being empty.
Business rates aren't set by the council, they are set by central government. Almost a fifth of MPs are landlords. Doesn't take a genius to figure out those rents and rates aren't going to plummet in the near future.
I don't mind a rummage round a charity shop, personally. I hope it's sells furniture. I've had a few nice pieces from the Heart Foundation shop. Lovely oak sideboard and a solid teak coffee table. I'm happy, they've made money. Win / win.
In an ideal world, town centres up and down the country should be filled with more than charity shops, coffee shops and banks. But unless we get a government that is actually for the small businessman, rather than corporate interests, I don't see it changing soon.

Apparently Dominic Raab is feeling the pinch on £80,000 plus expenses.
