Brexit Party top the polls in Sefton


Veteran Southport journalist Martin Hovden writes: The Brexit Party gained the most number of Euro election votes in Sefton, it was revealed in the early hours of this morning.


The party – started just six weeks ago by former UKIP leader Nigel Farage (pictured) – gained 19,848 votes, pushing Labour who control the local authority into second place (17,581).


The Liberal Democrats, who nationally had a very good night along with the Green Party, trailed in third with 12,438 votes. The Green Party were fourth with 7,717, while the Tories were fifth with 3,609.


Far-right activist Tommy Robinson came fourth from bottom out of the 11 parties who stood in last Thursday's election with 934 votes from Sefton residents, and came in the same position in the North West Region result, which includes our local authority.


The BBC's election specialist Sir John Curtice said the UK (excluding Scotland) remains polarised and divided, with the Leave parties winning a projected 35% of the vote and the Remain parties the same percentage.


The Sefton result (no figures for the Southport constituency have been released so far) is a reflection of the national situation, with the Brexit Party topping the national poll. However, the main difference in Sefton is Labour's success in fighting off a Lib Dem challenge for second position.


Nigel Farage speaking after being returned as an MEP in the South East, said if the country doesn't leave the EU by October 31, his party was ready for a general election.


Southport's current Conservative MP Damien Moore faces a major uphill struggle for re-election after his party was trounced last night. BBC political editor Laura Kuenssberg said it was the Tories' worst election result since the 1830s.


In recent years, Southport's general election result has been a case of musical chairs between the Lib Dems and the Tories. What makes the next election in Southport really interesting is the success of Labour in winning local council seats in Southport.


The Libs Dems traditionally urge Labour supporters in the town to vote tactically and support them in a general election to keep the Tories out. Now the same argument can be used by Labour.


Mr Moore's worst nightmare would be a pact between the Lib Dems and Labour, with one party standing aside.


That is highly unlikely in Southport.

Leave wins 2019 European elections. Remoaners: but the combined vote of the Remain losers is higher.

Yes a very clear one Brexit keeps winning by a country mile, collecting together the losers to make a points win I suppose might make the premier league more entertaining.

I might even become a championship winning golfer at this rate.

If the remoaners think that's the way ahead then join together like Change Uk MP's they ran away with it didn't they ?

We get that people want to leave, Doesn't mean we want to. We still have a voice.

Where is UKip on that list? Every one abandoned that party quick enough. People have just followed Farage. Which is a little odd as he stood down as soon and Brexit was passed.

Is the because back in 2016, we had a Peoples Vote and voted to leave?

That was his intention. Mr. Farage had achieved what he wanted to achieve. It was only when all the nonsense about leaving kept coming up, Mr. Farage said that he would be returning to get it sorted out. He has kept his word.

That is a very silly suggestion. So there is a second vote - already there has been three and still the Remain people persist. The result would be the same if not even more so for Leave - then what? Perhaps the Remain supporters would find some anomaly in THAT election - it is obvious that they are never going to be satisfied. So really what is the point? It is time that the Remain side reconsidered as to WHY the leave vote is so popular, what is it that the Leave supporters know that you don't know?

The EU elections were not for Leave or Remain. Voters turned out to vote for the parties that published manifesto's that they agreed with, or they voted for those who had done more in their own constituencies perhaps - they voted for the various parties accordingly. The Brexit Party had only one focus, it does not have a manifesto, it is a very new Party so had not gained any favour in any area - yet it came out ahead of all the other parties. Does that not TELL you ANYTHING?

If for any reason you want a bigger picture drawn for you - look at the voting from other EU member countries. There is a massive move against the EU. How many millions of people do you want to argue with before you become convinced?

A second vote call comes around from remoaners and scottish independence losers with monotonous moaning regularity.

The SNP for some reason believe their votes are more important than any other member of the United Kingdoms.

The anti-democracy extremists are in full flow and believe their votes are more important to.

It seems the days of people losing gracefully is over.

The latest nonsense is assembling the losers together to indicate a likely referendum outcome.

They should look at whats just happened the pub bloke in just six weeks has won the EU elections by a country mile, don't let him loose again.

He would have months to gain traction and get the majority off their backsides and vote.
