Commenting on the Prime Minister's announcement to set a target of net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, Emma Howard Boyd Chair of the Environment Agency said:
I’m delighted to see the Prime Minister set a legal target for the UK to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

This is not only the right thing to tackle the climate emergency for future generations but a huge opportunity to increase our energy efficiency, improve our resilience and deliver a greener, healthier society.

We know that investing in zero carbon solutions is good for growth - boosting jobs and the economy - and it is cheaper for business, organisations and government to tackle climate change now than to manage its impacts in the future.

When I launched a consultation on the Environment Agency’s Flood and Coastal Strategy up to 2100, a few weeks ago, I talked about the importance of building a nation of climate champions - people aware of the risks of the climate emergency and empowered to take positive action to help their communities become more resilient.

We know how passionate young people are across the country about tackling complacency in the face of catastrophe and taking action now to safeguard their environment for the future. So it’s encouraging to see the Government has established a Youth Steering Group which will advise them and review progress against their commitments.

Our individual actions count too, no matter how small - from the amount of water we use at home to the products we recycle and reuse. We have no option but to do this and we all have a part to play.

The Environment Agency is already working to tackle the climate emergency. Today’s announcement gives a powerful boost to all our prospects for the future and a common goal to achieve together.

I await one of Southport's uneducated, red neck bigots to deny that climate change is a thing.

As usual the Politicians have put the 'cart before the horse' again!!
You don't decarbonise until you've implemented appropriate enery efficiency measures such as LED lighting, heat pumps etc... and certainly not before the majority of UK vehicles have converted to hybrid / plug-in! Why? So we actually implement the correct
quantity of 'green / blue' generation to satisfy reduced demand not our current inflated pre-efficient demand levels. Simples isn't it??

Often wonder while everyone sings and shouts the delights of electric cars etc; how do we generate all this electricity?

It's simple - we use solar panels - oh no, there aren't enough of them and they're too inefficient. We use wind power - oh no, still not efficient enough. We use wave power - oh no, we haven't built them yet. We use nuclear - oh no, the green fingered brigade won't allow that. We use anaerobic digestion - oh no, nobody wants one built next to them - or on a green belt area. Err - sorry SF - we're stuffed.

Yep. It’s all so inefficient, 2018 had the lowest level of fossil fuel generated electricity since 1994.

Figures please - and the authority for them.

Incidentally - I think you might have missed my point.
I wasn't criticising the technology, I was responding to SF's question on - how do we generate the electricity to power the electric vehicles we are being encouraged to buy.
There certainly isn't the capacity at present to satisfy the anticipated demand - ergo it will need to be generated by burning fossil fuels which was SF's point.

did anybody see the utterly fascinating cloud hunters two weeks ago....the scientists had an air ship with all the latest scientific instrements on,,,they flew into every cloud across america they could sampling them annalysing them etc, finding out which type carried more water, howthey behaved etc etc....they were gutted at the final conclusion....polluted clouds protect the planet from the sun...the pure clouds allowed more radiation to get to the surface....the conclusion was the clean air act was heating up the seas and earth....i never saw that coming!

The amount generated by solar, hydro and nuclear has remained fairly constant, wind generation has increased, but we all know that the wrong weather can stop that entirely, then we have to call on the standby fossil fuel stations to fill the gap, yes I fully understand that this reduces the use of fossil fuels, but it is alarmingly inefficient to keep and maintain power stations in rolling condition without producing.

Then we come to bio-mass, don't know about you but I am far from convinced of the viability and environment benefits of cutting down trees in North America, those trees being processed into wood pellets then transported here to be burned in boilers.

One little island called Porto Santo is trying a venture which will be probably the only truly fossil free fuelled place in the world,

The concept is all vehicles will be powered by electricity, there are numerous charging points all over the island, every vehicle owner is expected to charge their vehicles during the day when solar energy is available, during the night vehicles are again plugged in to charging points and feed power back into the grid, however this is a tiny island with no heavy haulage as such, pretty well guaranteed sunshine all year round and they have invested and installed the technology to do this, so far it appears to be working with little or no use of the diesel generators they previously relied on, but even here the diesel generators have to be kept available, cutting in automatically when/if required

We are a long, long way from that starting with none availability of sunshine nor the technology.

Err no. Lol wtf? Are you making this up as you go along? What was the program called and when was it aired? ‘They flew into every cloud across America’ in an airship. Really? This I must see. I’ve googled ‘cloud hunters tv show’ and it mysteriously isn’t returning any results? Was it on The flat earth channel by any chance?
