If you know of any sites you think might be suitable for gypsies and travellers or for travelling showpeople then please contact West Lancashire Borough Council.

The Council is required by national planning policy to ensure that enough sites in West Lancashire are made available to meet the needs of the travelling community. The lack of allocated sites means West Lancashire is more vulnerable to the establishment of illegal encampments and weakens the Council's ability to take quick and effective action to secure the removal of such encampments.

The Council is looking for three types of sites:
·Those which may be used for travellers to base themselves throughout most of the year

·Those for travelling showpeople to live and store their equipment outside their touring season

·Those to meet the short term transit needs of travellers who are passing through West Lancashire on their way to other destinations or who choose to occasionally visit the area for short periods

Councillor David Evans, Portfolio Holder for Planning, said: “We know the issue of sites for the travelling community can be emotive and controversial. But this Council needs to comply with national policy, and so we are looking to find the best possible sites to meet the needs of the established travelling community in West Lancashire.

We are asking landowners and the public to make us aware of any sites that they know about that could be suitable.”

Details of potential sites should be received by the Council no later than Wednesday 31 July 2019 and should be submitted on the official form. This will be from available from Monday at www.westlancs.gov.uk/planningpolicy, or from the Council offices, or can be requested by phoning 01695 585284.

The Council will consider all appropriate sites suggested during this appeal with a view to the most suitable sites potentially being proposed for allocation in any future Local Plan.

this type of life belongs to history...it does not fit in with modern life...we cant encorage it...it puts strains on resources wherever they turn up...they should fit in with modern society just like the rest of us have to....or they could always pay their way and visit caravan sites like everybody else has to do.....but we know why they wont do this..

You can't opt in and out of society as and when the mood takes you, which appears to be the 'travellers' attitude. It's all take and no give and they contribute absolutely nothing to the areas that they visit, leaving only misery and destruction behind. They are beyond the law because it's too much paperwork and effort to get them to behave like the rest of society and basically they are a blight on the landscape - wherever that might be.

As a matter of interest, how much parking revenue was generated when they had a sit in at the Tulketh Street car park recently? Oh surprise, surprise - bugger all!

Totally agree with both of the two previous posts, society cannot continue to pick up the bill for the rubbish that these people leave behind on every site they illegally invade and subsequently vacate leaving local taxpayers to pick up the bill to clean up their rubbish.

He can go back to Ireland with them, load their hovels into a Hercules and wheel them out a couple of miles from the coast of Ireland. Worthless dirty thieving rubbish.

The majority of these travellers have homes - they travel out of choice, not necessity. A great number do have a fixed abode but choose not to disclose that fact. They are not welcome in any community in the UK - or anywhere else as I understand it. Traveller's are committed to a law of their own, very few have had any education for they choose not to do so, none have served any apprenticeships for a trade and as a result create more damage in any work they profess they can do. Since they are incapable of carrying out work, and earning money by an honest living, many seek to find a living by alternative means.

They have little respect for those who do work hard to earn a living and who buy small luxuries they can afford. The travelling people do not care about local environments since they are not staying any length of time and they do not contribute to the economy in any way. Before these people are given plots of land to use - it should be made law that they agree to pay a council tax for the land they use, that the children should all have to attend a local education facility and any advertising for work should carry the necessary insurance details and professional certificate notification.

It is understood that the traveller's claim a minority status. Even minority groups have to abide by general laws and local rules. These people should be no exception. To do otherwise, means that these people are given a status above all other citizens and receive far more leniency in law - in that they are not expected to pay fines as they do not have a discovered fixed abode. When these people have to abide by the same rules and regulations as the rest of the people in the UK, and respect the communities upon whom they ingratiate themselves, then they will be given respect in return.

They don't seriously think that decent, law abiding people who pay their taxes are going to help find sites for these low life to dump their filth do they?

Forty years ago the government stated all Councils had to provide sites for 'the travellers'. St Helens provided a lovely site. Travellers moved in and are still there, 40 years on.
