I take the words of Katharine Dommett (Oxford University Press)
Boris Johnson has deftly used a combination of intellect, scandal and wit to boost his own status and normalise his views. In so doing his exhibitionist, outsider persona has greatly advanced the Conservative’s electoral cause, at once attracting a clutch of new supporters and energising the grassroots. In this chapter it is argued that oratory is integral to Boris’ success – but also marks his limitations. The blend of humour (pathos) and logic (logos) deployed often at the expense of his own character has helped to create a unique personal appeal which attracts broad support and disarms opponents.
Boris is clever don't doubt it, he has rode a huge media firestorm yet still gets to the job in hand convincing MP's to support him.
We who don't get to vote and wouldn't join the Tories are not on his radar neither are the media much to their chagrin.
I still believe Johnson will be an absolute disaster.

Well, perhaps not totally - he has only to hang on in there for a couple of years, he could make it. One thing is sure, whatever he says he means - he does not make a song and a dance out of it -so just this once we may know how things really are in the country.

He won't be popular with people who would never vote Tory anyway.
A disaster I doubt he is too intelligent , the risk is more a damp squib.

That may be true at Bullingdon Club level, or even a constituency level, but not at Cabinet level. Compared with his predecessor, he was a poor Mayor. He was an unmitigated disaster as Foreign Secretary. He has no staying power. He starts out well enough, he does his usual floppy haired bluster. Then he reverts back to he arrogant prick he actually is. His inappropriate comments about dead bodies in Libya, his recitation of Kipling verses, his absence at meetings. His actions regarding Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe should have seen him banished to the political wilderness for good. And that's just in one position. The list goes on and on.
As PM, he'll start out well enough, then cause a vote of no confidence. Those wheels are already in motion, in fact. I don't think he'll particularly care. He'll return to his well paid Torygraph column, satisfied he's achieved his destiny.

Are you mad? He was sacked from the Times for lying. At his first stint at the Torygraph, he lied about he EU, including plans to introduce same-size “eurocoffins”, establish a “banana police force” to regulate the shape of the curved yellow fruit, and ban prawn cocktail crisps.
He lied about his affairs. He doubled down over his bus lie. His utter bull about the people of Liverpool. he list is almost endless.
One thing is sure, he'll lie through his teeth.

His actions regarding Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe ?
His "actions" was to say as he understood it the charge was she was “simply teaching people journalism”
That is not in any reasonable country a reason to lock someone up.
This Iranian apologist line and more recently over the oil tanker attacks the reason these despot regimes continue.
Boris certainly does knock the plaster off the ceiling sometimes as he puts it but no objective person would imprison this woman on those words, would you ?

She went to Iran as a holder of Iranian Citizenship on the pretext of a holiday and was caught teaching journalism, what Boris should have donewas protest that she was merely there on a holiday but he did not either by incompetence or deliberately and backed up the charge.
When in Rome........

It isn't a reasonable country. It's a country run by Islamic fundamentalist zealots, whom I assume need to be treated with kid gloves diplomatically.
Had Johnson merely been writing his column or ministering to his constituents, I doubt Tehran would have even noticed him. However, he was our senior diplomat. The highest position in the Foreign Office. And already trying to deal with Iran over a £400m debt from the sale of tanks.
He should have been painfully aware of the delicacies of relations with that country, particularly with the nuclear deal in the balance. Her team were fighting for her freedom with the defence that she was merely visiting her family. The Iranian authorities held her on spying charges. So who do you think the Revolutionary Guard would listen to? A family fighting for her freedom, or Britain's senior diplomat who completely contradicted them?
Johnson is a liability.

The problem full stop is the treatment of this woman by Iran.
Boris lying for her is not likely to engender any trust (if there is any to be had) between our countries.

So when Jeremy meets Trump would you like him to tell Donald straight or tiptoe around the tulips.
Asking Boris to lie is diplomatic suicide when the Iranians caught her bang to right.
Boris Johnsons line that she was only accused of teaching journalism is an entirely reasonable remark.
You must think these things through, just because you don't like anything Conservative you cannot by accident become an apologist for these despot nations.
Nothing they are doing is reasonable.
Should Jeremy make Prime Minister don't we want him straight talking to the countries he has condemned for years.
What if he was to say "Yes Mr Netanyahu we don't think its much of a problem your treatment of the Palestinians" ?

No, the woman should have known better but went ahead relying on her British Passport, normally the FO protest it was a mistake, Oh so Sorry she's a Brit etc and she's released. But no, the buffoon wades in and makes things worse.

Floppy Boris he may be but he is not a Buffoon for what he said about her.
Don't become an apologist for the Iranians just because you don't like Boris.

Corbyn has nothing to do with anything. He's not in power, and if he was, he wouldn't be Foreign Secretary. That is whataboutery. Whatabout Jeremy. Whatabout Corbyn.
Neither Alikado nor I are 'apologists' for Iran. It might have been too subtle, but I don't think a statement such as 'It isn't a reasonable country. It's a country run by Islamic fundamentalist zealots' is exactly heaping praise upon Iran.
Johnson was our senior diplomat. His words matter. As he tried to bluster his way out of, then admitted yesterday.
Because I dislike the Conservative party doesn't change my opinion of deranged religious maniacs. Because I know Johnson is a lying buffoon doesn't make me a cheerleader for Ayatollahs.
But your defence of the lying cheat may say something about you.

No I defend the incident and what he said not the man, the Juries out for me on him.
Nothing he said makes the woman fair game for the Iranians, blaming him for her fate is giving the Iranians a get out they don't deserve.
Despots love people like you who deflect valid criticism away from them.
