Many Southport cyclists break the law on a daily basis!
Yellow box junctions are indicated by criss-cross yellow lines painted on the road and are present at the many railway crossings in Southport.
When the crossing gates go down, cyclists ride upto the gate, they do NOT wait outside the yellow box, this means they are liable for a £70 fine.
Box junctions. You must not stop in a yellow box junction (unless you are turning right and are prevented from advancing by oncoming traffic, or other vehicles turning right). Potential penalty: Fixed Penalty Notice of up to £70 outside London and up to £130 within London

You get a lot of motorists breaking this rule at the lights on Sussex & Norwood Road, the worst are those going towards Kew.

I'd ride up to the gate to get through quicker and not hold everyone up - I leave that to the cars that enter the crossing and then turn their right turn signal on to go into Sandringham road leaving everyone behind going mental.
Take care out there

That is an unfair generalisation! When I am out cycling - at the Railway crossing gates - I wait very patiently on the footpath!

Then so should pedestrians who cross roads. They're every bit as likely to be the cause of an accident.

Published in this week's news - That because so many couriers in London ignore the rules of the road, i.e. cycling across pedestian crossings when people are on them, cycling through red lights etc., consideration is being given to a new rule where cyclists must display registration plates.
Which is political talk for saying that cyclists should have to pay for the new cycling routes nationwide!

This type of comment would have been unheard for most of my lifetime This country has become a festering sore of intolerance instigated by the likes of Murdoch and his ilk.
The cyclists of mainland Europe must be bemused by the toxic attitude here.
Don't go to bed angry. Stay up and plot your revenge.

This makes me so angry and it happens every damn time the barriers lift. Have these people no idea how dangerous what they are doing is to those behind them? Indicate BEFORE you cross the tracks so that people behind can wait behind the Box Junction. Otherwise they are stuck across the tracks waiting for you to turn whilst another train might approach and the barriers need to drop again. Better still, make it no right turn into Sandringham Road.
I'm only happy when it rains....

Mainland Europe is far more spacious than the hugely congested area of the UK. Germany's acreage is two and a half times larger than the UK and has 88 million people, France is three times the size of the UK and has the same number of people as the UK. Driving in mainland Europe is a dream compared to driving in the UK. (Except for driving into Paris)

I think its time us cyclists were given some legitimacy and voice, we are too easily dismissed because we don't contribute in the way other road users do.
It is surely time we payed up and joined in.
The money raised initially could be ring fenced for cycle lane maintenance and supervision.

Or, reduce the pavement width just after the crossing, so at least cars going straight on can 'undertake' any waiting to turn right.
Also, didn't I read a while ago, plans to build a new housing estate where the school is/was at the end of Sandringham Rd?
That'll make the situation even worse than it is now

As for VED low emissions vehicles don't pay it so why should cyclists? VED doesn't pay for the roads anyway the money goes straight to the treasury. Insurance - when I'm out on the bike my insured car and motorcycle are sitting at home. You would be surprised how many serious cyclists do have insurance they may be one of the 125,000 members of British Cycling which has an insurance policy as a benefit. How are you going to get a 10 year old who uses his/her bike to go to school to pay insurance anyway?
Take care out there
