Would You Buy Halal Meat
A discussion was held in the House of Commons on the 3rd April last, on the topic of the unnecessary suffering of animals at the abattoir while in the process of being prepared for the domestic market.
The discussion involved the killing of pre-stunned animals and non-stunned animals. UK law demands that all animals should be stunned prior to being slaughtered, while in respect for certain religious minorities, a certain number of animals are excepted from this ruling.
Several European countries have banned the use of Halal meat completely, while others use a method of stunning once the throat of the animal has been cut. In view of the new Animal Welfare Bill being introduced into Parliament today (Wednesday 26th June) which deals with longer sentencing for those who mistreat animals - should this bill also cover include halal processes? Should all the shops and restaurants selling such meat, place notices in the window so that people can make a choice?

No, I wouldn't knowingly buy it either. Should be banned completely.
There should be notices in places that sell Halal meat. Preferably in some other country that employs such barbaric practices, not here. If we must eat meat (and I do) then those animals should not suffer for it.
I don't quite understand this. If your God gave us this planet to live on and made all the living things on it, why then does the God turn into an evil tyrant that wishes to visit cruel punishment on other people or animals? If your God gave us the means to advance as a race, giving us ways to be kinder, why not use them instead of slashing defenceless animals throats and letting them bleed to death, or whatever barbaric practice that you have interpreted from a book that's thousands of years old?
Amazing how these Books are suddenly open to interpretation. If your book tells you to slash animal's throats, then maybe the next time you need a bit of Germolene for that boil, take yourself off to the greengrocers instead, and slap a fig on it. Kings:20 1-7. Got gut ache? Don't bother with Rennies. Go find a priest / rabbi / imam and get him to purge you of 'emotions' in the liver.
******* barbarians.

As far as I'm aware some branches of Nandos, Subway & KFC serve Halal meat but the outlets which do have it clearly displayed. Apparently a blessing must be said before the animal has its throat cut, well, that makes it acceptable then...NOT! Have a question, why isn't there the same publicity re Kosher meat, and is there a difference?

I do have a difficulty with the 'ethical' stand taken on this issue.
I'm unclear on whether - forcing an animal to wait in a holding area within earshot of the carnage going on, with the smell of blood and evacuated bowels heavy in the air, is any worse than - being forcibly grabbed and strung up before cutting it's throat and letting it bleed out.
If we choose to eat meat then we accept cruelty and suffering will be inflicted upon the animals concerned - it's a bit like being asked which do you prefer - suffocation or drowning.

I have no issue with it so long as the animal is stunned first, which for the vast majority of UK halal meat is the case. If you eat meat then arguing you have the animals welfare at heart is a hollow argument.
"The animal may be stunned prior to having its throat cut. The UK Food Standards Agency figures from 2011 suggest that 84% of cattle, 81% of sheep and 88% of chickens slaughtered for halal meat were stunned before they died. Supermarkets selling halal products also report that all animals are stunned before they are slaughtered. Tesco, for example, says "the only difference between the halal meat it sells and other meat is that it was blessed as it was killed."

Halal and Kosher meat must be intended only for Muslim and Jewish consumption respectively.
There should not be excess quantities distributed for general use.

^^^ this.
People should stop thinking they are better than someone else just because they have a difference of opinion. I wouldn't choose Halal meat, but if that's what was on offer, Then I would still eat it. The animal is still dead to satisfy our will.

I don't buy any meat. Pure Soy Boy here, as you can tell by my gentle and tolerant manner. If I was a dead animal eater I would prefer that they'd been stunned first. Halal is cruel fare, like any other meat, with the potential for an even more unnecessary extra frosting of cruelty.
I never knowingly buy Halal certified products - even if they are vegetarian. In purchasing them you are paying a percentage of the price to the Halal certification board which uses the money for the propagation of Islam. Not something I want to encourage.

Why do we accept animal suffering or indeed human suffering in the name of religious tolerance its a good question.
We also accept women treated as second class citizens.
Do we accept it or do those who lead us accept it for us thinking they know better ?

What has the treatment of women got to do with Halal meat?
Or are we just turning this into an anti-Muslim thread?

No Just wondering why you bothered mentioning it?
Getting close to inciting hatred.
Getting a real little Britain vibe going on. Anything that's different is wrong.
Basically you sound like a dinosaur.

You seem to hold a very low personal threshold for what you deem to be tantamount to inciting hatred!
Is there a criminal act you have identified as being prepared for?
