Both Southport and Ormskirk hospitals have been steadily run down over the last number of years, in fact there have been moves made to close both, all due to our marvelous government and their "savings".
This has all the hallmarks of standard Tory methods, underfund, neglect, then when the cracks show, close it down or hand it to some private contractor, apply this rule so many areas of public sector and the policy is plain to see.

Sorry to hear about your Aunt. I have been to Southport Hospital. It is an extremely busy hospital but the staff are always polite and courteous. However, on one occasion when I was half comatose - I was put in a bed with blood stained sheets. Not to worry - it must have been worse during the war time! It put me off when walking around the path to the back of the Hospital - in the Library is a special book section for Surgeons. I could just picture some of the surgeons carrying out an operation while reading a book "How it Works"
Actually - the surgeons carry out operations both at Southport and Ormskirk, they are very good.
Ormskirk is a much quieter hospital, more laid back and with a relaxed atmosphere. The staff are excellent and have a great sense of humour. Though I fail to understand why the staff are not allowed to eat the same excellent meals that the patients are given - the staff have to pay for their meals separately. There is also television sets to every bed that patients have to pay to watch - why anyone would want to watch a damned television when they are supposed to be ill is anyone's guess - and it is noisy for those who are really ill.
Walton children's hospital - now moved to Alder Hey - was a complete shiite of a place. The atmosphere could be cut with a knife! One particular nurse there had a mouth on her that would have swallowed up all the filth in the North sea. A real *****!
I don't know about the other facilities - I hope I never get to learn either.

Many, many years ago - my Dad would tell me that the Conservatives have always wanted to close the NHS down.

Unfortunately Southports problems are mainly due to some of the staff.
I have had reason to go with some patients many times recently and some of the clinical decisions are appaling .
Patients bounce in and out like rubber balls with failed discharges.
The fact that Broagreeen and Ormskirk both NHS facilities are praised shows that its not all about the Governments stewardship.

Are you referring to pre 1914 when the children from Walton hospital were transferred to Alder Hey?
I thought I had forgotton how to make lumpy gravy.

I was wondering about that too. There never was a Walton Children's Hospital. It was originally built as a workhouse... the West Derby Poor Law Institution. In 1913 it became the Walton Infirmary Institution. Finally in 1930 it became Walton Hospital.
Said must be a lot older than he sounds if he remembers children being transferred from Walton Institution to Alder Hey!

Could be those glass cases holding the head of a loved one with life support for the head a'la Uncle Albert are actually in use. Instead of being called Head they called him Said. Eddy to his friends who buy him a new cap for birthdays and Christmas.

Southport & Ormskirk are not Teaching Hospitals therefore they will not attract the top Consultants, all trainee / junior doctors want to work on the top mans team therefore they only get 'whats left' when they recruit.

that is very worrying to hear i did not know that....southport population is expanding rapidly....something has to be done to improve our hospital...i am scared to go there!!....the elderley population is rising fast....all they seem to want to do is let you die peacefully and not help you....when my mother died there recently they lied about the cause of death (really a hospital induced clot that should never happen) ,,,then lied about the location of her death...they said it was in a nursing home???...i had to get the coroner to change the details....do not trust any of them whatever they tell you....group action is needed to push up the care in our hospital..your life may depend on it

I was taken by ambulance to A&E in March after a fall. Apparently I was suffering from various things including severe sepsis. I am 80 with no close family.
My next of kin is no 17 on a priority list in order. Hardly close family. I think this was significant - no one to hell-raise if they were found out! They did not understand what they would be up against when I found out - if I survived of course.
I remember an awful lot of what was going on during my 4 hours or so in A&E including the doctor telling me that they were keeping me in overnight.
17 days later I was released and given a discharge letter.
When I got home I opened the envelope and found that I had a DNR/no CPR slapped on me and the box was ticked to say that they had discussed this with me!
I was upset, but most of all furious, that this had been done without my knowledge or agreement. It was later suggested that it might have happened when my condition deteriorated in A&E and I was confused.
I do not honestly believe this as I recall my time in A&E quite clearly and in any case in such circumstances one’s next of kin should be contacted.
I later kicked up a fuss of course with threats of the local press and solicitor/court case if necessary. I was appalled at what I considered to be a downright lie on a form that was a matter of life and death.
Now the DNR/no CPR notice has been reversed but not without a fight and lengthy investigation.
Elderly people be warned - it DOES happen. Make sure your relatives know your feelings on the subject!

That is truly terrible, Toothache. Even if you had been confused, surely they don't have the right to decide life or death for you? If a person is unable to make an informed decision, then as you say, their next of kin should be contacted.
It's also shocking that when you recovered you had to fight to get the notice reversed. It's your body, your life. Why shouldn't you be able to overturn the notice?
On the plus side, I'm glad to hear you're back home in one piece. Hopefully you're feeling a lot better now.

An absolutely appalling and most distressing experience for Toothache.
Furthermore, Southport Hospital staff need to be aware that as a result of a ruling by the Court of Appeal in 2014, doctors have a legal duty to consult with and inform patients if they want to place a Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) order on medical notes.
Previously guidelines for doctors had recommended that patients and families should be involved in such decisions, but since 2014 this has been a legal requirement.

Is it Ethical to talk to a seriously ill person and not have the family involved about a DNR?
I would say definitely not, if they were signing a Will in the same circumstances I suspect that the lawyers would be all over it to get it invalidated.
