Cyprus False Allegation of Rape
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-49142550
Why do women (mainly) keep making false allegations of rape against men? No matter how much a man proves his innocence following an allegation, he can never truly clear his name.
"No smoke without fire" - depends who starts the fire!!
Defendants accused of a sexual offence should at least be anonymous until charged. I'd go further, and say anonymous until found guilty. If someone is in jail then others can come forward at that time and have further charges brought.
The criminal justice system makes it far too easy for people to make false allegations and ruin innocent people's lives.
Please sign the Cliff Richard/Hon. Daniel Janner QC petition.

This is an issue which goes right to the core of Justice.
In the first instance those vile or sick people who make false allegations diminish by degree the likelihood of genuine victims being believed.
Secondly, given the heinous nature of the allegation, those accused are forever tarnished because there are indeed those idiots who shout 'no smoke without fire'.
third - why cannot the alleged perpetrator enjoy the same anonymity as the alleged victim?
Some would say that by publicly naming them, other alleged victims might be encouraged to come forward.
Is that really justification for maligning a persons good name and character? After all, isn't the allegation supposed to be tried on the facts and not supported by hearsay.
In the interests of fairness shouldn't the alleged victim lose the right to anonymity so that it might encourage others who have been falsely accused to come forward?

I used to live in Cyprus, read the Cyprus Mail every day, and get regular news updates from Cypriot relatives and business associates.
I'm not saying that the young lady is free from blame, but there's a lot more to this story than meets the eye, not least the fact that Cyprus is in dispute with Turkey who are trying to drill for gas in Cyprus' EEZ. Israel is supporting Cyprus, so they don't want to upset Israel .
Meanwhile, this is what a prominent Cyprus bishop thinks about homosexuality:

Are you saying that Cyprus has more loyalty to countries not in the EU?

Yes I am, notably Russia, who are waiting to pounce as soon as the leases on the British bases expire. Perfect place for continuing to prop up Assad and having moorings for Russian warships outside the Black Sea.
Cyprus has just milked the EU for infrastructure money whilst ignoring EU laws. The Electricity Authority of Cyprus is still a state-owned monopoly 15 years after Cyprus joined the EU. Nothing to do with its senior officials having relatives in high places, and nothing to do with Cyprus having the highest electricity prices in the EU, despite the abundance of solar energy.
For the same reasons (mainly nepotism) the Cyprus government illegally subsidised Cyprus Airways losses to the tune of €50m per year, until the EU finally said 'enough'. Cyprus Airways went bust shortly afterwards. Their staff used to get 13 months salary a year, and many had another full-time job.
Cyprus vehemently denies that it is a money laundering centre for Russian mafia money, but when Cyprus had an EU 'haircut' after the Laiki Bank went bust, Cyprus government ministers allegedly tipped off their Russian chums and told them to get their money out pronto. Days later, the Cyprus government dipped into peoples' savings accounts and creamed off 10% over €100,000 as they are entitled to do. This is partly why the British retirement villa market collapsed overnight.
Mind you, Boris is a lot more loyal to Trump than he is to Macron, Merkel etc., isn't he?

I see no evidence there is an epidemic of false allegations from women.
Its probably more accurate to say there are a lot of men who have got away with rape or as near as dam it.
Still innocent until charged should mean anonymity then further cases could be added if further victims come forward.
In the privacy of most scenario's of rape it is extremely hard to make a case.

No, I voted remain.
Cyprus had those kind of issues long before it joined the EU, and it is a small, rather inconsequential member, like Malta.
Wanting to leave the EU because of 'rogue' states like Cyprus would be like throwing the baby out with the bathwater imho.
The EU does need serious reform, especially at the top. Ironically, it needs the kind of ebullient, direct style that Boris brings to the table to bang a few heads together and cut through all the bureaucracy.
Another irony is that it's likely that other member states are going to get a better deal out of the EU because the UK has spit its dummy out - I'm sure that Macron, Merkel etc have been a bit rattled by Brexit.

Fair enough!

It would appear now that when the woman recanted her original accusation, she did so under coercion from the police without a lawyer present:

Corrupt Cyprus police? Never!

A woman may claim 'rape' against one man for various reasons but I could never accept that a woman would falsely accuse 12, yes, 12 men of raping her! If she were to do so falsely, each of the twelve would support one another and she would not get away with it. As it is, that situation still stands and yet she has still made that accusation. There does not appear to be any DNA to corroborate her story, and there is supposedly a video of the event showing the girl was not distressed. There needs to be more information published before anyone can make a judgement.

If that had really been the case, then I would be the first in line to throw away the prison key. Let them rot in jail.
But fortunately it was proved without any doubt that all the sex was definitely consensual...
Three of the accused didn't deny having consensual sex with the lwoman. She withdrew her accusations after a video was produced of her, and three lads having 'happy hour'...
The Cypriot police round up additional young Israelis who were staying at the same hotel as the three main accused.
None of them knew what the police were going through on about,
( language barrier) and one guy was asleep in bed with his fiancé and dragged out of bed in the middle of the night.
They didn't know each other before the incident and it was coincidental that she said 12 men. FFS.
The nine lads lost a lot of money through her false allegations and as someone said , humiliated.
