Southport veteran journalist Martin Hovden writes: The statement by Prime Minister Boris Johnson in Downing Street yesterday evening that Great Britain will leave the EU on October 31st "no ifs, no buts", is the clearest indication yet that we are heading for an early general election.
It was also a strong hint that he knows he is likely to lose Tuesday's opposition vote rejecting a no-deal Brexit. So come later this week, he is likely to stand at his podium again and argue “I'm trying my best to carry out the public's wish (via the 2016 referendum) to leave the EU, but they are binding my hands. Let the people decide with a general election.”
In fact, BBC political editor Laura Kuenssberg revealed she has been told it could be held as early as October 14th.
And Southport is set for a very interesting, two-horse battle. Tory Damien Moore is the current MP, but he faces a tough battle with Labour's Liz Savage.
Just two years ago the seat was held by the Liberal Democrats, but they are a spent force in the the town. They were pushed into third place by Labour at the last election. And since then, they seem to have lost their parliamentary campaigning spirit.
Even an enthusiastic political observer like me had to google who the Southport Lib Dem parliamentary candidate is – it's John Wright, by the way. He and his team have left it far too late to build up a credible profile in the town.
MP Damien Moore currently has a 2,914 majority, with Labour's Liz Savage snapping at his heels (she increased the Labour vote by 13.4% in 2017 – Mr Moore's support went up by 10.7%, while the Lib Dem vote decreased by 4.6%).
October could be a very lively month. Watch this space.

Going Lib Dem (especially after their big fuss about whether Damien was local) would be a massive step back for the town. 15 years of soundbites, voting for Southport unfriendly policies and handwringing from John Pugh gives a good indicator of how little they can/will achieve in the future and in my view the sooner the councillors are replaced the better as they’ve created the toxic and divisive atmosphere in the council chamber I’d say very much to the detriment of the town.
You could also take their view of why they lost last time as they have taken Southport for granted for too long (but they won’t exploit being local this time I’d imagine):

The spanner in the works is Jeremy Corbyn, I meet few people except die-hard Labour fans who want him as Prime Minister.
The public also have a problem with Labour Policy on Brexit.
The Liberal Democrats anti democracy stance do them no favours.
I see the lack lustre Damien creeping back in,
never has none of the above seemed more appropriate.

Dumb Damien is the politician who seems to be everywhere there is a photo opportunity but has done nothing for Southport.
He supports a creaking government from whom power is being stripped as sensible MPs try to avoid the macho No Deal that Boris threatens and would plunge the UK into chaos. Even the government admit. No wonder Boris wants an Election before the 31 October when the **** hits the fan.
If an Election is on the cards then dump Damien in favour of a party that does have responsible people. A Peoples Vote would be on the cards.

If there is to be a General Election soon then I don't you can extrapolate anything from what has happened previously in Southport or, indeed, anywhere in the country. We are in uncharted territory politically and the next Election is likely to be, to all intents and purposes, a second Brexit referendum. That's why the likely result is virtually impossible to call.

It is not the announcement of a No Deal that would force a General Election - it is the MP's in Westminster who disagree with the electorate for their own personal agenda, who are intent on doing so. Those MP's will have to decide if a general election would provide them with the result they seek or if they are likely to lose their positions. It is these MP's who have caused the delays in leaving the EU, they are intent on defying the result of the referendum. This is unprecedented in British history where democracy is dependent on the will of the people, not on individuals in Parliament.
Should the debate go ahead tonight, and if these MP's are all agreed to their decision, it would have to be put to the House of Lords this week before Parliament breaks next week. If such a bill is passed it would mean further delays for Brexit - possibly up to January of next year to allow for a deal with the EU which suits these MP's to be agreed. Delays to Brexit now would be highly detrimental to the trade deals waiting to go ahead as soon as we leave the EU. To prevent that from happening - a general election would be necessary. Labour are in a tenuous position, their percentages overall have dropped drastically over the recent months, the Liberals are in an even weaker position. But the Brexit Party are in the strongest position have won most seats in the European Election earlier this year. Combined with the Conservative Party - we are confident that the people will win, and that British democracy will forever continue.

Was John Pugh any different, especially given he had many more years of chance to cover? Cherie Brandie and Prasnee couldn’t event provide any examples when asked so if lib stalwarts like they were couldn’t list examples then you’d conclude there weren’t any. Can you therefore expect John “is he local” Wright to be any different?

Do you understand the difference between a Councillor and a MP?

The Lib Dems will pick up votes from those wanting to stop Brexit though.

True, but they do have an incredibly poor record of sticking to promises and Jo Swinsons voting record shows she’s as Tory as many Tories (Pughs doesn’t seem too dissimilar)
Fundamentally regardless of busses a large people wanted change because the country/system wasn’t working for them, even if brexit was stopped, what would i it the country as I doubt the libs will know....eg the last lib candidate in Southport thought a tram from ASDA to the pier would solve our woes. Putting “peoples” in front of “vote” and “parliament” doesn’t fix this problem.
Finally in the previous parliamentary votes, abstentions should not have been allowed as just highlights they are not able to do their job in representing us.
