Homes and roads blighted by flooding during downpours should be offered a rebate on their rates according to Lib Dem parliamentary candidate, John Wright, who has dubbed United Utilities attempts to contain the problem a complete failure.
"The fact is that due to minimal action on the part of UU, the problem is getting worse not better. With global warming heavy downpours and flash flooding is becoming the new normal.
People though oughtn't to expect their roads and drives to turn into rivers on a regular basis.
Houses that are paying United Utilities £800 a year or more for drainage and supply should be able to expect better than this.
If United Utilities are not prepared to put their hand in their pocket and put the investment in now to solve the problem, the least they can do is repay residents for not selling them a service under false pretences. That should concentrate their mind. I will be writing on behalf of residents demanding a rebate."
Cllr John Dodd , Meols Ward Councillor, added , "We have had warm words and excuses from United Utilities but this cannot go on - particularly as Sefton foolishly is planning more housing in the area, building on fields that act as a natural soak-away. "
Don't suppose it could gardners
blowing garbage into the gutters.
Then it maybe a building company
rinsing out his mixer into the drains.
Next time I'll video it and pass
it over to sefton and utilities ,then they
can fine the property owner.

Out of interest, profits from what exactly are going to France? How intriguing.

The gutters probably are full due to all the local Lib Dem councillors and PPCs trying any opportunity to grab a vote by slamming Sefton council whilst offering or having a track record of delivering nothing

The issue, as investigated by Sefton council and United Utilities is a Victorian sewer pipe which cant cope with heavy surface water. When it rains hard for a prolonged period the sewer backs up and human excrement floods the road and footpaths.
The ONLY councillors to do ANYTHING are the Lib Dems they have tried to get things changed for about 15 years now, particularly John Dodd. The other parties have done Nothing!

What absolute tosh!
the problem lies with the Government of the last umpteen years who have, year on year, cut Local Authority budgets. You might remember the doctrine of Austerity - it was quite popular recently - I say recently because it's over - apparently.
The Conservatives are to blame because they started the implementation of Austerity, the Lib Dems supported them in Government.
The Lib Dems are further culpable because, once they'd got out of bed with the Conservatives, they abstained when the vote to pass the next round of cuts was taken. In my view that is the same as voting for them.
Labour are to blame because they did not have the courage of their convictions to refuse the implementation of the cuts - bleating from the sidelines is not enough. A Labour controlled council should have stepped up to the plate and made a stand.

How aggressive you are! It is not absolute tosh at all. Do you not agree with the engineers report? I'm a local resident, do you know better than me who has helped us with this issue? You are typical of what is wrong with people these days, a keyboard warrior, quick to shoot people down. I was not blaming anyone if you look back, I was pointing out who had helped us over the years. For the record, this flooding has gone on for 50+ years, so many governments are to blame, the problem is climate change has exacerbated things.....also, I don't vote Lib Dem, but I appreciate their efforts.

The article does read like a party advert rather than getting the issue resolved especially with their PPC bundling in with his thoughts to try and grab some votes by saying he’s going to write a letter for some residents he doesn’t represent in a town he doesn’t live in. Trying for 15 years with no effect does make you feel like they won’t succeed.

Aggressive - really - you can discern that from my post, keyboard warrior - what humbug!
The water backs up as it does after heavy rain because the gullies are blocked, either fully or partially. We've had heavy rain before you know and the Victorian sewer should be able to cope as I believe the Victorians also endured periods of bad weather.
As alluded to by thedisconvulate earlier in the thread - these gullies used to be cleaned very regularly but now they would be lucky to be done annually, if at all.
The cause of this - austerity and the associated cuts to services - I merely highlighted the culpability of individual parties, in particular, the stand of 'not my fault guv' taken by one in particular. If that offends your middle class, liberal sensibilities then I'll just have to learn to live with that.
I got pretty offended watching good people being given their cards because of policies which were either implemented, supported or ineffectually opposed by the three main political parties.

Its NOT the gullies, its the sewage pipe which has been confirmed by UU and Sefton Council. Ring them and get the facts. And as I have already said, I am most definitely NOT Liberal. If all you can do is attack people who are being affected by flooding you should be ashamed of yourself! Don't bother continuing this thread because I'm done with your irrelevant ramblings.

It was not meant to at all, quite frankly right now I wouldn't vote for any of the main parties. But it is purely based on fact, John Dodd has tried for years. Initially it took several years to establish who was responsible, once it was confirmed to be UU we have been told they don't have the resources to change the pipe.
