The average UK harvest is around 15 million tonnes of wheat, so there is enough quantity to meet the UK milling industries tonnage requirement. However, it is not all of the quality required by millers, and as such some wheat is imported. Canadian wheat is generally imported for bread-making purposes, because it has excellent characteristics and gluten strength which work well in a blend with UK wheats. French wheat is generally used in the manufacture of French style products where softer flours are required.

Your a bit out of date on that Hovis were on 100% British Wheat years ago
Small manufacturers always have found their good quality wheat here.

All the big manufacturers are at the mercy of the weather so we import German, French, US and Canadian wheat and others if necessary.

Don't panic though the wheat will still grow somewhere in the world and we will able to buy some.

Don't be sucked in by these remoaner scare stories.

We trade as an EU member, not as a country on our own:

As a member of the EU, the UK currently participates in around 40 free trade agreements with over 70 countries. These free trade agreements cover a wide variety of relationships, including:

    • Economic Partnership Agreements with developing nations
    • Association Agreements, which cover broader economic and political cooperation
    • trade agreements with countries that are closely aligned with the EU, such as Turkey and Switzerland
    • more conventional free trade agreements

In 2017, ONS data showed that trade with third countries with EU free trade agreements accounted for around 12% of the UK’s total trade.

In leaving the EU, the UK is regularising the terms of our WTO
membership because our commitments are currently contained within the EU schedules.

We do not have any trade deals other than as part of the EU.

In case of Brexit, the UK would therefore need to re-negotiate or start new bilateral negotiations on 124 trade agreements, plus one additional trade agreement re-defining its own trade status as a third country vis-à-vis the EU.

    Data is from

The National Association of British and Irish Millers (nabim) is the trade association for the UK and Irish flour milling industry

Your quoting 1 brand that used to be 100% British wheat for 3 years but that idea was dumped over 5 years ago.

Don't panic we can grow it here and Boris has promised to go over with a bag if we have bad weather.

Still it makes a good scare story so as Halloween isn't that far away I will join in the nonsense and say we will all starve and turn into zombies.

    Hmm hungry zombies.

As I understand it, the problem isn't that the UK can't produce enough wheat for its own needs. I believe that the UK is actually a net exporter of wheat. Bakers need a percentage of strong wheat mixed with UK wheat to bake bread that rises evenly. Historically this wheat has always been imported from Canada.

Until the Canada/EU trade agreement was provisionally applied in 2017, the UK imported Canadian wheat under the EU's WTO tariff schedule. On leaving the EU, the UK/Canada will revert to WTO terms, and imports will carry on as they have done for donkey's years. I just checked on the UK's temporary tariff schedule as filed with the WTO, and wheat will still enter the UK tariff free. There's no need for a lopsided loaf!

I read that the strong wheat used by Hovis was a special version of Canadian red wheat developed for the British climate. However some years the weather hasn't cooperated, so Hovis had to use imported red wheat.

That sounds like a truly massive task, taking years and years....without any guarantees of getting as good deals as are currently in place.

If they believed they were duped by lies why did they support the government bill.

If they were still so incensed why did they stand on Brexit supporting manifesto's ?

The infamous Bus complaint laughed out of court.
I'm sick and tired of smug halfwit politicians who keep saying the people didn't know what they were voting for. Well unless the very same smug halfwits think they have brought the education system down that far that we are too thick to answer a yes or no question then they should be looking in the mirror and shaking their heads with shame. I have wanted out of this undemocratic pig trough for years.

Doh! There are trade deals in place - just waiting for the EU to disappear! Not long now though. Tomorrow - Queenie's Speech. Thur/Fri EU summit, Sat special sitting of MP's - then we will see if we have a proper Brexit or violent protests.

No trade deals on the side right now, though. Which is what I said. We trade as an EU member first and foremost.

'Violent protests'? PMSL. Like when we were meant to leave in March? Sure. Zimmer frames at dawn. Bunch of paper tigers. All mouth on message boards and forums, no actual intention of doing anything.

Just like last March. Few people are willing to do anything, especially elderly leave voters. You might write a stiffly worded letter to your MP, but that's as far as it goes.
