Debenhams store in Southport is now closed..
In a statement, Debenhams said:
"We would like to thank all our customers for their loyalty over the years and our colleagues for their outstanding work over the years
We regret that we won't be able to keep the Southport store open; this is unfortunately a necessary element of the turnaround plan to give Debenhams as a whole a sustainable future and is in no way reflective of the very hard work and excellent service of our store colleagues.
Whilst this store is closing, Debenhams remains open for business.
Once again we would like to thank everyone who has shopped with us in Southport and we look forward to extending a warm welcome to our customers at any of our stores around the country in the future."

Its a shame but a couple of points.
I and my better half have struggled to go into either Debenhams, Beales, Bon Marche, M&S the list is probably longer and find anything "interesting" i.e fashionable. Its the same boring massed produced stuff all the time and people are basically sick and tired of the same.
However that aside last weekend went to Chester....buzzing and all the shops closing or have closed in Southport are still open there, including H&M, Burtons, DP and others.
Blame rents, rates yes, but I think the business models are awry somewhat, or basic lack of footfall due to bland products.

Hightons, Marshall & Snelgrove, Wareing & Gillow, Broadbents, Boothroyds all High Class shops vanished.
You just can't envisage what is going to become of Debenhams building. Perhaps it could become the Worlds biggest Charity Shop.

Just for interest the biggest in the country so far is in Preston (40,000 square feet)
and those Americans have some huge "Thrift" stores.
