Why slavishly recite these preposterous stories about Cummings being the power behind the throne ?

It doesn't add anything and just smacks of sour grapes ?

Genuine posts with real insight and proof are very welcome by me but scattering more of this tosh is bound to get you some terse retorts.

Boris certainly hasn't stifled opposition they have done it to themselves and the electorate confirmed his removal of the whip was justified.

Take one example Dominic Grieve claimed the country and his electorate supported him result he lost to an unknown.

Maybe one more David Gaucke voted out.

and every one of his so called stifled opposition.

Or maybe his proper opposition, Jeremy Corbyn rejected
    by the electorate.

I agree with SF , he ain't done nothing yet .

However many of us who didn't vote for Johnson hope that he is as good as his word in promising to 'rebalance up' the prosperity of the UK in favour of the North. This weeks re-shuffle does not bode well - he has installed a junior minister to take lead responsibility for the 'Northern Powerhouse' project , but it will be overseen in cabinet by the Transport Secretary. Although transport is an important element of NP it is fundamentally about devolution - of power, decision making and prosperity from London.

The trouble we non-believers have is that Johnson has told so many blatant lies throughout his career (which has got him the sack 3 times that we know about) that it would be remarkable if whatever 'promises' he has made during the election campaign actually come to fruition.
Whatever it is - I blame Brexit!

    Aah the lies,

    let he without sin cast the first stone springs to mind;

There was “Euromyths”, including plans to introduce same-size “eurocoffins”, establish a “banana police force” to regulate the shape of the curved yellow fruit, and ban prawn cocktail crisps.
    Then the euro-condoms.

    Theres the big red Bus.

The Times sacking over allegations he fabricated a quote from his godfather, the historian Colin Lucas, for a front-page article about the discovery of Edward II’s Rose Palace.

    His affairs with Petronella Wyatt.

Most of us in the big real world are really not bothered.

As to not doing much surely he has dug the ground and dealt with the weeds ?

Dealt with the weeds or merely uprooted those that that didn't suit and replaced by unsuitable weaklings that won't thrive.

You see it as clearing the weeds, many see it more as filling government posts with lapdogs, patsies and yes men/women, the main qualification being slavish obedience to the great leader.

This tactic will no doubt continue, attacking any media which doesn't sing the praises of Johnson and the supreme unquestioned authority of the denizens of NO 10.

After the clip of them all in the 'how many hospitals will we build?' cringe-fest around the Cabinet table, then the all out attack on the 'wrong' journalists, press photographers and the threat to 'whack' the BBC, then it's obvious this PM cannot stomach scrutiny or dissent.

Then there is the all out attack on the judiciary. I think Fat Al is still stinging over the prorogation attempt that Lady Hale & co put a sharp stop to.

    All very Trumpian.

As for Cummings, of course, there have always been figures close to the PM, such as Alistair Campbell. I don't know if he was ever describe as a 'career psychopath' or had feuds with Cherie Blair or Sarah Brown over Cabinet reshuffles. Or had people frogmarched out by armed police. Or spent several years in Russia. But he does seem to wield too much power in Downing Street. Thank goodness we've left the EU so decisions about our country’s future are no longer taken by unelected advisers.

Short of something surfacing regarding Fat Al's wrongdoings, action being taken in the form of civil dissent, his own party turning against him, or just his own low boredom threshold when he realises being PM wasn't the hoot he thought it would be,we have Johnson for the foreseeable. If nothing else, the media - particularly the BBC - should hold the government to account and hold them up to scrutiny.

Before Murdoch is installed as our new national broadcaster.

There are already rumblings from the swivel eyed ones of the BBC becoming a subscription service and scrapping the TV license, the short sighted and other brain dead will see that as progressive, when in fact it is aimed purely at silencing an independent voice.

That would be a great shame. Aside from the news coverage, which I do watch but don't necessarily take as gospel, the BBC offers a great deal from TV through radio to the iPlayer.

However they've pretty much shot themselves in the foot as far as political coverage is concerned. The dubious declarations from Kuenssberg, the Tory bias of 'This Week', the way they allowed Fat Al to completely dodge his turn to be interrogated by Andrew Neil. And most of all, the manner in which they actively promoted Fromage on Question Time, over and over regardless of whether he was a politician or not. For an institute widely decried as 'communist', they've done an awful lot to promote the far right.

Now there is little else for them to cover BUT Johnson & co. The field is theirs alone. Apart from a bit of news over whoever is the next Labour Leader, it is the bluest of blue skies for a good 5 years. That's a lot of attention on someone who wishes to control his media output to hand selected publications and photographers.

I'll miss some of the excellent drama on offer. But there are more ways to watch that than a subscription.

According to the Brexiteers and assorted blue noses the BBC was biased against them, but it is becoming obvious that Johnson and cohorts don't take criticism very well at all.

I know you aren't Kuenssberg's number one fan, but even she had the morality to walk out of the "selected" press briefing.

I'm not a fan, that is true. She fawns over Johnson in interviews. Until the 'walk out' she's hardly been unbiased. I assume those journalists who walked didn't have the time to check in with their bosses, so used their own judgement, rather than calling in to the S*n, Torygraph and Heil.

Whether Kuenssberg walked because everyone else did, or because she really felt Fat Al had gone too far is unknown. Hope it is the latter, as I think most people are heartily sick of the 'hack into a murder victim's phone' standards of journalism. Kuenssberg & co have to hold this and future governments up to scrutiny, as the powers that be seem to have found the far-right formula for swaying the populace. Cambridge Analytica and all that.

We haven't got a far-right government or anything near.

Jo Swinson described Boris as a Socialist dictator.

The "crime" of the BBC lies not in any opinions it may or may not have; indeed it has a liberal spread of political views across its presenters (Neill has always been a Tory, Nick Robinson was formerly Comms Director for the Tories); and in any event every programme has editors.

They don't simply turn up and spew their opinions.

Its crime is in doing its job. Reporting the news ( which is frequently uncomfortable for the government) and giving room to those with opinions to express them. I frequently see and hear opinions expressed by people on the BBC which I disagree with. But I don't blame the BBC for them having those opinions.

It is an utter disgrace that this government is taking revenge on the BBC for simply doing its job during the referendum and the elections. Which included trying to get those who would lead us to show themselves to us. Corbyn, to his eternal credit, did that. Johnson, disgracefully, did not.

And it is a further disgrace that we are letting them get away with it.

Socialist????? Never, dictator, has all the attributes.

When it comes to dictatorship the concept of political left or right largely vanishes, dictators are all about control by whatever means, dissent, debate, discussion or alternatives are to be ignored or quashed.

Remember power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely.

I suppose it depends on your perspective, but I can't think of any UK government in living memory that is further right than the current one.

As for Jo Swinson, we know how well her utterings were received. She also stated that Johnson was like Corbyn.

Yes I have to admit quoting Swinson undermines any comment.

Johnsons record in London was not that of a right-wing politician.

Boris is a pick and mix politician.

The Budget might well be the most accurate precursor of his direction.
