Hundreds of new home owners do not appear to be keen on gardening. They prefer to lay gardens with imitation grass and cut down all trees and shrubs.

Councils have allowed contractors to cut down thousands of trees, and councils have also cut down road side trees all over the UK.

Trees, Shrubs and Lawns provide food and shelter to insects and birds. These in turn help to pollinate the foods we eat.

So well done to Simon Shaw for his brilliant idea to distribute free trees to local gardeners to plant these in their gardens - well done to all those who helped him, and great to see so many people turn up who are aware of the main purpose of gardening.

I wonder how many of those who protest about the environment, global warming etc., actually do any gardening?

I was understood, that every time you got planning permission to build a house or flat. You had to plant 3 trees per unit. If you had no space to plant the 3 trees you paid the Council £1,000. Have the Council stopped doing this?

Hypocrite is a mild name for him I prefer something far far more abusive.

Ever wondered why acres of cabbages, carrots, leeks, etc can be regularly seen growing in local fields? Answer: because farmers know there is a demand for them......Foresters grow FSC timber for precisely the same reason i.e. to satisfy the demand for their product.

Now, if there were no demand for vegetables, none would be planted. Same story with FSC trees grown as a crop on managed plantations......If nobody bought logs, no trees would be planted to satisfy the demand for them. In other words, you should instead thank all those happy users of woodstoves - for encouraging commercial forestry to plant up hundreds of acres with CO2-absorbing trees!

Well, er...? That is a quaint way of looking at it - but it is not quite accurate. All sorts of wild life use the trees and without having a habitat there would be no creatures to ensure certain types of food that we eat. The supply and demand is to those creatures, is it not?

Be grateful we don't live in S****horpe.

I think it is slowly trickling through that we need more trees. Billions of them if possible.

The trend for fake grass is appalling too. My daughter has a patch in her garden where the kid's swings are. Dreadful stuff. It gets waterlogged. The dog pees on it. It isn't even flat. I've nagged her about it but despite the fact it is filthy and useless, she doesn't have the time to do any gardening. Pretty sure a patch of tough grass or plants would serve her better.

Same with patios and flags. No drainage. So nowhere for groundwater to go. And tarmac everywhere. So more trees, wild flowers in as many areas as possible, and some kind of free draining alternative to tarmac would help with flooding and serve the environment. But, as always, councils simply don't have the budget for such things.

Cutting down MATURE trees to burn is madness.

Burning wood releases more CO2 than gas, oil and even coal for the same amount of heat

For logs from mature Canadian woodland, it could take more than 100 years before the atmospheric CO2 is less than the alternative scenario of burning a fossil fuel and leaving the trees in the forest.

It cannot be carbon neutral, the trees need to be cut, processed, dried and delivered most likely on large diesel trucks.

Leave the Trees alone.

Our Government has pledged to plant 30 million a year let's see how that helps.

A) Agree in principle. It's a shame to see a fine tree felled on a whim. However, when timber is grown as a crop I accept felling and selling as part of the process.....Just how long would the forestry business survive, if they never ever harvested what they had planted?

B) Trees first absorb their CO2 from the atmosphere, then release it when burnt. So overall there's no net CO2 released. Whereas CO2 released burning fossil fuels is on a one-way trip from underground into atmospheric CO2.

C) Not always the case. I know of at least one log supplier, who chose 100% solar power - his logs dried in redundant commercial greenhouses. Coal too, is delivered on trucks - as is fuel oil. Even British Gas contractors use trucks to carry pipes for relaying gas mains.

D) Great plan.... Hoping business will go plant trees and simply walk away is never going to happen, despite what some believe. The situation obviously needs Govt grants to make it a reality.

Was not the coal, oil, Gas, peat etc once vegetation that was absorbing the same carbon?

Yes, and because we're burning that, as well as the timber, we're producing CO2 far faster than it can be absorbed.

I must admit I found your comment that British Gas contractors use trucks to carry pipes desperate but highly amusing

Are you sure you haven't got a flue leak ?

Millions of trees are being planted in this country and others without recourse to burning them by the likes of the National Trust 20 million, World land Trust 22,14140, The Tree Council and many others.
