Merseyside's Liberal Democrats, have revealed radical plans to axe political posts like the Mayor of Liverpool and the Mersey Police and Crime Commissioner. Both Mayor 'Big Joe' Anderson and Police Commissioner Jane 'can't afford to live as an MP without more cash' Kennedy have drawn considerable criticism for years for the personal political patronage which they have wielded over many years, giving mountains more of public money to Labour politicians.
Presently, residents of Liverpool have three Mayors plus a Crime Commissioner. In Southport, we have one fewer Mayor as the political patronage around here lies in the hands of Bootle Labour Council Ian Maher. We are ruled by a Maher, not a Mayor! The cost of all these people to local council tax payers, even before you take into account expenses and appointment of political aids as deputies and Cabinet Members, is phenomenal. In Greater London, they have just one person, London Mayor Sadiq Khan elected to carry out all these responsibilties.
The Lib Dems are bidding to cut numerous council posts and bureaucracies. Their candidate for Liverpool City elected mayor in the elections in May wants to scrap the title 'Mayor' "within 24 hours" of being elected and to put the liberated cash into local services.
In that same time, Lib Dems says they would halve the army of bureaucrats servicing the 'Mayor'. Liverpool has even more high paid top aids than Sefton which has recently agreed record salaries for its cadre of top council posts.
Further, any successful Lib Dem Mayor would also immediately start discussions with central government to scrap the post of 'Elected Police Commissioner' and combine the police responsibilities into the work of the single City Region Mayor as they have in London.
Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson has been reselected by Labour to stand for election again in May whereas Jane Kennedy has abandoned the Labour Party because of antisemitism concerns and is leaving politics.
Lib Dems say they want to ". . . cut out the waste and duplication and associated bureaucracy and spend money on front line services and not politicians and bureaucrats."
The people of Southport should call time on the Lib Dem’s, they’ve achieved nothing of note for Southport and held the town back for years with their divisive ways. Even with these grand plans in this article does anyone believe they have a chance of implementing them?

Well, there certainly have been no improvements under a Labour council, that's for sure - in fact, Southport is being slowly strangled by the inner city councillors. "Boo hoo, you did not vote for me, so I am not doing anything for you!" How puerile! Where has the Labour "I Love Southport" candidate gone since the election? Labour spends all its working time critisising the opposition - fat lot of good that is for Southport.

I think you’ve missed the point....
- you’re mixing local and national politics if you mean Liz Savage and probably John Wright too?
- we have had Lib Dem councillors and an MP for years, yet what can be attributed to them other than the prevalent nastiness from some of their “senior” councillors
- I’d say in terms of criticising the opposition you’d find it most true with our Lib Dem’s who if only doubt “Blame bootle” rather than look at themselves to why they’re so ineffective
- they’re incapable of cross party working so unless they’ll get a majority what’s the point.
so in summary, time to call time on the Southport Lib Dem’s as “the fighting for Southport” is hot air with no outcomes other than “fighting with Southport” on social media and in the area committee.
Finally for a bit of Lib Dem hypocrisy, John Pugh had 8 votes on introducing PCCs in various areas and 100% of the time he voted for them, so can excuse the eye rolling when Libs try to stay relevant with a bit of trying to grab the moral high ground from a situation they helped create in their 5 years of fame walking away with several knighthoods for services to the country
