Having to make the same choice today
If you were to start out again, and you have saved enough money for a deposit on a house - what would you choose and why?
1. Would you buy a brand new 3/4 bed house that no-one has lived in previously.
2. Would you purchase a traditional 6 bed house that has been well maintained for a similar price.
3 Would you purchase a house directly in town which is smaller, without a garden.
4. Would you choose a new house near the motorway so you could travel easier,

Th question is incomplete. "If you were to start out again, at the age you were then (or at the age you are now) and you have saved enough money for a deposit on a house - what would you choose and why?
Age is simply a matter of mind - age doesn't matter if you don't mind

'If you were to start out again' infers that you are a first time buyer.

None of the above. I'd buy a traditional 3 or 4 bed house. 6 beds would be excessive. New builds tend not to be of the same quality as older houses.

I do not think any of us would mind starting out again - but that is hindsight, after gaining the knowledge and experience that we have now.

That is true - but I would go for the larger house for the money because you could let out the excess rooms. Most certainly I would not go for a new build - far too small for me.

That's the only way anyone can answer your question, isn't it? Based on hindsight and the experience that we have now? Otherwise your question is unanswerable. After all, it started with "If you were to start out again". And the heading was "Having to make the same choice today"!

Touche! You are right, of course. So what would you have done in hindsight?

I'd have wed the same girl I did for 57 years ago. Bought the same little flat I did then, moved to the same houses I did after that, and loved having the two kids I did at that time. And the grandkids I have now. What more can one ask? I have loved every minute of it. I feel sorry for those who can't look back and say the same.

It's an almost impossible question, our previous experience very much what makes us what we are today, if I or anyone else set out on a different path than the one we took, would we have married the same person, had the same children, grandchildren and I for one wouldn't swap any of them.
If it was just a question of housing, frankly would probably have still gone for similar housing and location, not new, preferably fairly recent but let someone else find the faults, would be in a rural/semi rural location, min 3 decent size bedrooms, garden, drive and garage, sounds just like both our previous homes, till we downsized on retirement.

I'd never go new, New houses come with little to no garden unless you are spending a fortune.

That is brilliant - so you would not have changed anything? Good for you, sincerely.
Personal question I know and you do not have to answer - I am just inquisitive - what made you move to Norway?

Yes, I would hate that too. I love my garden. I would be pretty miffed if I had to pay a ground rent and could not do what I wanted to in it without asking permission. Another reason why I would not buy a new house.

Good answer. Yes, definitely not new - as you say, first let the faults appear and let someone else deal with them. Very shrewd. There are a lot of people who want to live in a brand new home, a place that no-one has lived in before but my mate worked on one of those sites and repairs to those houses were commonly needed before anyone had moved into them.
I disagree on downsizing though - I like a lot of space. I think if I moved to a smaller place, I would get claustrophobia.
