Should a New Law be introduced
Is everyone a 'victim' in this modern age?
A programme on BBC, was about two women complaining about the harassment that they receive from some men while walking along the street. These two sisters are saying that a new law should be introduced in which it should be made illegal for men to call out or make abusive suggestions to women.
Personally, I have never felt the need to call out to any stranger in the street - but it does happen. Everyone has experienced verbal abuse at school - did anyone go running to the teacher?
Is it not time that people started standing on their own two feet? Or will the courts be under so much pressure from whinging victims that they will be unable to deal with far more pressing situations?

No

Seems a perfectly reasonable suggestion to me. And not just in cases of men verballing abusing women

Glad to hear it (though sadly it seems you consider those who are on the receiving end to be "whingeing victims")

I'm sure some did and I'm sure some didn't. But the behaviour of schoolchildren is hardly comparable to adults abusing each other in the street which is surely unacceptable. Adults are supposed to have grown up.

Well you'd hope if something was illegal then people wouldn't do it. That's generally why things are made illegal. You'd also hope that adults could behave decently towards each other regardless.

Harassment. Why the hell should women be harassed when walking along a street? Or anywhere else, for that matter. Men generally don't fear walking down the street because they are going to feel intimidated. They don't fear cat-calls or sexual innuendo from strangers, not knowing if it is just some prick who feels they are entitled to treat women however they like. Or that it might lead to assault.
As usual, some typical victim blaming here. Not the perpetrator's fault for acting like a sub-human troll. The victim's fault for 'whinging'.
Why isn't your question 'what the hell is wrong with these men that they feel the need to assail and abuse these women in this manner'?
Thankfully this behaviour is an aberration to most blokes. It's a relic of the past when women were chattel. Instead of questioning the motive of the victim, why not stand with decent men and condemn this sort of behaviour as unacceptable?

There are already plenty of laws in place concerning harassment and lewd behaviour.

Care to explain how you came to that conclusion?

I don't dislike Muslims. I don't dislike anyone based on their religion.
I dislike organised religions. All of them.
I dislike any religion that creates inequality. Which is almost all of them.
But specifically Muslims? Not at all.

In fact it is men who are more likely to be victims of violations - sexual offences against men have tripled in the past ten years, and it well known that many men do not report this type of crime. Men experienced an increase of 183% of sexual assault, rape against men has increased by 299% - while women have experienced an increase of 80.7% of sexual assault, and 190% rape!

It is entirely unacceptable that women and particularly young women and girls have to put up with harassment from stupid men but even with my own I would struggle to think it was a Police issue they have enough to do.
A new law means more work for the Justice system from the Police onwards.

So men are more likely than ever before to commit rape. Whether they are raping men or women? Some men just rape a lot. More men than ever are rapists.
Yet women who complain that men are making them scared by their harassment in the street are just whinging?
OK. Makes perfect sense.

To be honest, I doubt anything would come of it if it was reported. The police are overstretched as it is. They struggle to get out for a burglary, never mind harassment.
Perhaps just letting people know that this kind of behaviour is totally unacceptable would help. Education rather than litigation.

It is a good point that men raping more men and women does not produce a helpful set of statistics.
It's probably a reflection in part that people are shaking off the victim shame that must have helped so many in the past to get away with their crimes.

A bigger increase in men being victims doesn't necessarily mean they are more likely to be victims.
