Matt Ashton, Director of Public Health for Sefton, said: “We can confirm that a case of COVID-19, also known as coronavirus, has been confirmed in the borough. This case is linked to a known case.
“We understand that this may cause concern, but we want to reassure residents that we are continuing to work closely with Public Health England, the NHS and all our health and care partners to prevent further spread of the virus.
“Due to patient confidentiality, the exact locations and details of this case cannot be published. We continue to stress the importance of regular hand washing to residents.
“We all have a part to play in preventing the spread of all infections, including COVID-19 (Coronavirus).
“You should always take steps to reduce the spread of germs by catching your sneezes in a tissue, binning used tissues, then washing your hands.
“We already have strategic and operational groups in place and meeting regularly, with key partners round the table, to review the COVID-19 situation at all levels to ensure that we take the necessary steps to protect the health and wellbeing of people who live, work and visit Sefton.”

They will tell people who need to know i.e. those who have been in contact with the patient but not everyone else. That is standard practise as other wise it would break quite a few laws and cause total panic where there was no need.

So how do you know if you may have been in contact with this individual, If you don't know where they are?

Your looking at this the wrong way round. The patient will tell the health authority who they have been in contact with and they would then contact you if necessary. You are looking at this from a very selfish perspective.
I can understand that they won't identify an individual, but I wouldn't have thought that saying which part of Sefton the outbreak is in would be breaking the Official Secrets Act. That would be pretty 'general', wouldn't it ?

So if they announce that the individual lives in your area what would you do? Move!
There is nothing you can do so why cause potential panic, as has been posted the individual will be able to notify the relevant authorities of who they have been in contact with and it can be dealt with sensibly without causing mass hysteria

Hilariously exaggerated. It has absolutely nothing to do with OSA. It has everything to do with patient confidentiality.
The general public are not entitled to know anything about anyone else's medical state - so deal with it and follow the advice you're being given.

Someone somewhere in Sefton will have something more serious than the favourite virus of the month should we be told about them too. There are discarded used needles all over the place but there doesn't seem the same panic about them.
If you get coronavirus or whatever they want to call it you get it I would rather die peacefully with it than worry myself to death about it. KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON.
