Sir Keir Starmer looks too much like a lawyer in public appearances and should "put some more welly" into speeches, his deputy has said.
Angela Rayner said her boss was "such a funny character" when there was "not a camera in his face" but in public often presented himself as unemotional.
"I do think some of his conditioning when he was a lawyer …somethimes he takes the emotion out of it and hi puts the strategic stuff in," she told Newscst on the BBC. "And I think, 'No, put some more welly into it!'
"I'll go in with two boots—you know what I mean! Whereas Keir is a bit more sort of, 'I'll go in with the strategic case and the detail'. He cross-examines in a very forensic way, which I think some people prefer that style, by the way. Other people think I'm too brash and I should tone myself down."
Starmer's appearance during prime minister's questions this week raised eyebrows as the Labour leader, days after two in five Tory MPs voted to remove Johnson, chose to focus on the government's record on the NHS.
Rayner insisted that it had been a "good performance", but said: "The way in which I'd have gone for Boris is probably slightly different to how Keir does it."
Rayner described herself as being "very pro-industrial relations" when asked whether she supported strike action on the rail network this month.
Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) union will attempt to cripple the network for three days in a dispute over pay and redundancies. The union has made donations worth £5,700 to Rayner. |
|
…The Labour deputy leader has been a vocal supporter of the RMT's previous plans for strike action. She blamed the government for present dispute and defended the workers' right to strike.
"I'm very pro-industrial relations. As a former trade union official, I can tell you that no one goes on strike at a whim," she said. "I'm hopeful they will come to an agreement. What we don't want to see is people having to lose a day's pay to take strike action that they can't afford to take, and we don't want to see the disruption to the public."
A focus group this week in the red wall consituency of Wakefield, where a by-election will be held on June 23, suggested that Starmer was failing to appeal to former Tory voters. It involved people who had voted Conservative for the first time in 2019 and was conducted by Kekst CNC for Times Radio.
Of the eight voters, five said they would not vote Tory again while Johnson was leader. However, they said that Starmer was a barrier to them switching back to Labour.
The voters described Starmer as "weak", a "slippery slimeball" and "someone who opposes for opposition's sake".
Starmer has staked his leadership on an investigation by Durham police into whether he broke lockdown rules by having a beer and a curry while campaigning for the local elections last year.
Raynor, who was also at the event, said she was confident that neither of them would be fined.
Lack of clear position on strikes will raise fears about Labour, leadiing article, page 29

His team say Starmer’s main task has been repairing the party’s internal workings after the strife during Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership.
…
There really is no path for Starmer and Labour.
20th century Labour's limited successes were constructed in milieux that no longer pertain.
If Labour's surprise general election result of 2017 (12,877,918 votes, 40% vote share) was a consequence of diminishing party loyalty in the context of Labour's longer term decline of support in 20th century reliably safe constituencies, but offset by unanticipated gains elsewhere, while Sir Keir Starmer seems to be unable to regain robust support anywhere in spite of a failing Conservative administration, then the next general election promises to produce a spectacularly fractured parliament.

A man of honour in Sir Keir Starmer's unique position as ex-head of the CPS would not make such a vacuous proclamation with his faux offer to step down.
All he is doing is putting pressure on Durham Police and hoping to get off.
He knows he is guilty.
An innocent man in his position with his knowledge would not countenance a wrongly issued FPN and certainly would not step down for it.
He might offer to step aside whilst he appealed it but not lose his job to an injustice.
It is all so reminiscent of Tory Jonathan Aitken and his cardboard "Sword Of Justice"
Sir Keir needs to follow the Japanese model and use his sword of justice to puncture the self-inflated balloon of hot air that envelopes him.
Might it not be better for him to improve on of all people, Boris Johnson's example by apologising now,
not wait to see if he has got off with it.
Just pay the FPN Sir Keir and get on with the bigger job as leader of the opposition.
He won't get rid of his nemesis Boris Johnson from some self-imposed purdah.

When he made the offer of standing down he knew that he has on safe ground that there was no possibility of any fines being issued.

Perhaps he should look to Johnson for a role model?
Caught and denied it. When forced to admit it, blamed others. Never a hint of acting honourably.
Starmer hasn't denied it, and says if found to have broken the rules, will walk.
That's what a decent person does.

Yes it's strange Boris taking the moral high ground but there he is.
Apologised took the fine and got on with his job even though he didn't think as a non-lawyer he broke the rules as advised by his staff.
Starmer knows better than anyone as a top lawyer that he did, so he puts pressure on Durham Police in the hope they will let him off.
As I said if guilty go now, stop putting the pressure on the innocent hard working Police Officers.
If innocent stand aside appeal the notice.
Who would think Boris taking the higher ground at least he was at his workplace when surprised.
Starmer was miles away and had no need to be in Durham for the advertised Beir and Social and it certainly was no surprise well maybe that Angela was there.
Well spotted

Boris knew the rules , he was on TV every night telling us what we couldn't do.
Starmer knows because of his Legal Training he didn't break the rules, he was in Durham because of the Election, Campaigning for the candidate, it is what Party Leaders do, it is part of the Job.

Well, that's an interesting slant on things,
Keir was away from his office at a pre-arranged social event he had no need to make the zoom calls in Durham to the party faithful, he could of course have done them wherever he had an internet connection.
There was no one to campaign to at the Durham Miners club.

The office at the Durham Miners club was Campaign HQ, it is an office rented from Durham Miners Club by the MP.

Yes your right no need to be there to make zoom calls and have a Beir and curry.
As I said no one to campaign to.
The "work" could have been done from home or their usual workplace.
Can't understand why he isn't just being honest about it, at least Boris was in his workplace and home.

They had been out all day campaigning and legitimately meeting people.

Awww, poor lamb. He's too stupid to do his job. Too stupid to understand the 'you cannot participate in a gathering of two or more people during lockdown' rule, even though he hammered it home to us all on TV night after night.
And now he's blaming his staff, is he? I haven't actually read this. But he isn't taking any responsibility, then?
'Somebody said it's OK'.
Funny, I'm not a lawyer either. Neither are millions upon millions of folk in this country. All of whom managed to understand the simple words 'you cannot participate in a gathering of two or more'. When we heard those words flowing from Bunter's mouth daily.
This obsession with excusing Bunter of flagrant law breaking makes the original Mad Nads look almost hostile towards her beloved.

The difference is he was working, running the country and expecting like Rishi a cabinet meeting in that room.
You might have been running a tap when you worked out what to do without a lawyer.
You have clearly never run much .
You might then realise that there is rarely only two present at any time in his day.
Perhaps someone could help you find out what Prime Minister's do.
You might then realise they are surrounded by advisers for everything and more.
A technical breach it appears but certainly nothing to consume the nation with for months.
Happily condemn my new manlove beloved for a whole list of important things.

Nothing technical about the breach, birthday cake and wine are not part of the office / work environment the come under the heading of celebrations and parts.
He and Rishi should have done what the investigative reporters of the NotW did 'made their excuses and left's, he should then have reminded his missus that the Cabinet Room is not part of the flat.
