I think excuse for the trip to Barnard Castle to 'test his eyesight' is ridiculous, especially if he risked his wife and child in the car at the same time. One of the reporters asked why didn't they just set off for London, and turn back if he didn't feel up to it. Cummings said "I didn't think of doing that".

I also find it hard to believe that he left for 14 days and didn't tell his boss he was going. I had good relationships with my bosses over 40 years in work, but I don't think I would have taken a liberty like that and expect to still have a job when I got back. I think that Johnson agreed for him to go, but told him not to mention it so as to take the spotlight off himself. Speculation, I know.

Cummings also took every opportunity to have a pop at the media, incuding a denial of his 'herd immunity' remarks. He tried to imply that they were responsible for him being a figure of hate and not feeling safe in his home.

The biggest thing for me, though, is that he and BJ were completely silent about this until it was exposed by the Mirror and Guardian. He admitted that he should have 'come clean' earlier, but this was only after the reports appeared in the papers. I think that he and BJ knew full well the storm it would create about 'one rule for them and one rule for everyone else'.

Hopefully some of the journalists will put country before story and gird their loins till this pandemic is subdued.

The reality is that his working in Downing Street clearly does not have the power balance that some think.
The country is more important than Cummings, sadly this merely typifies the attitude and approach, none of which augers well for the country, of course we all know that the bottom line, is this will be quashed, there are a few years to go before the general public can voice their opinion, therefore the government don’t care what the public think, hoping that all will be forgotten before any elections.

By the way your constant “ remoaner” and “lefty loser” staple diet is out of date, we all know what the election result was, we all know that the Little Englanders are in charge of Brexit, we can’t do sod all about it, we will have to live with it, that doesn’t mean we have to like it.

In your view it would appear that everyone should now fall to their knees in supplication to the great Johnson, got news for you, it ain’t going to happen.

I have a theory. I think that on the day of the referendum, he went on a triumphant lefty-loser-remoaner-short-thinker-Boris-intelligent-bitter-Corbynista rant that so excited him he had the (to use Johnson's term) spaff to end all spaffs. A megaspaff, if you will.

Now he desperately tries to recreate that by constantly, fervidly typing (one handed) those same words over and over. But nothing can match that Brexit result moment. He tries. The spirit might be willing, but the flesh is limp. He probably pictures his darling Boris, full of (to use Johnson's term) sp.... no, I'll not use Boris's word, but you know.

So give him his lonely 'lefty loser' moments. Don't be hard on him.

I welcome the "support" from the lefty loser and remoaner in chief.

Will I stop using the terms nope not a chance, the years of reading the incessant lies and scare stories from them will take a long time to go away.

The wish to subvert democracy left the final indelible stain.

Only a fool would believe the pursuit of Cummings is not propelled by the losers looking to exact their revenge.

It might make sense if Boris was not suffering from Coronavirus and on the scale of the countries problems Cummings being in his dads or a brothel might not have consumed what was left of Boris's attention.

There are an awful lot of people other than Cummings in number 10.

Cummings if you watched the press conference was clearly a person the journalists despise.

If you have seen the constant media presence at Cummings house and the vitriol hurled at him you might understand his concerns.

As to the test drive home you highlight the eyesight comment unduly of the account he gave.

As to silent until the Groanadian & Minor picked up the story are you remotely suprised.

On balance Cummings still hasn't exonerated himself fully but the media have put their dislike of him and his history way above the national interest in a time of global pandemic.

    He isn't that important.

Correct, he's not that important, the whole virus episode has been a loser for the Tories, approval ratings have dropped continuously on his watch. Cummings left more questions than answers today, you could see his nose growing, followed by Hancocks Half Hour with the stuttering idiot who never answered a question just telling us to keep washing our hands must have convinced any undecided viewers of his guilt.

Far more import the country has lost to this media fetish with Cummings he is a mere adviser not a Minister and the pursuit of him is clearly personal.

His actions whatever you think of them did not deserve the blanket coverage.

If you were left with more questions than answers after the hour I am surprised.

I have no problem with you disagreeing with his course of action and condemning it but how are you left with questions ?

Cummings isn’t Mr Popular, he comes across as hating anything not under his or government control, he loathes the independence of the civil service, he certainly has no time for the press, this from a guy who wishes to control other ministers teams, wants everything centred on NO 10, has fired staff of other ministers, it’s no surprise that when he screws up good style, the press are on him like a terrier after a rat.

As to his importance, for a hired hand he certainly has undue influence on government policy.

Does care whether he goes or stays, we all know that if he is moved, it will only be sideways, he will still be there possibly a little deeper from scrutiny, but still there.

This whole thing should be more about his regard for the advice and instructions from government, of which he very much part of.

Noticed on this evening’s news, people who have thronged to the coast today, when asked how far they have travelled, the reply was simply we can go anywhere we like after Cummings’ trip, convenient reason sure, but impossible to deny.

Going by the numbers who turned up on a visit to the beach on a lovely hot sunny day - long before the Cummings saga, I don't think it would have made any difference.

As I said before, Cummings is anathema to the media moguls because of his deft handling of an issue which they strongly contested and which will receive a final decision in January 2021.

It doesn't matter who it is, if there is a front page story around the newshounds will be there in numbers, successive Governments have looked at curbing the Press but always backed off as they are too afraid of upsetting them.
Too much of the story doesn't add up, it was announced from No. 10 that he'd gone into self isolation showing symptoms yet embarked on a journey of nearly 300 miles (his words) with his sick wife. Whilst up there at a place not his home, a deed that people have been chased away from the Lake District even when they own the property he went one a jaunt of 60 miles, said he felt unwell and still drove back to London the following day. Also whilst he was away did the PM not wonder what his pal was up to, even self isolating I would have thought he'd be in regular contact if only to chase up a few loose ends and to had things over.
It doesn't add up, I think it is far from over.

The bit you miss is the wish to safeguard his child.

If it was just him then no ifs no buts sack him.

If it was just him and his wife again sack him.

Would I drive 300 miles to get my child in a place of safety then yes and yes again.

Boris had Coronavirus so wasn't wondering what Cummings was up to I suspect.

His actions for his "test run" are to me the only grey area if its proved he has in any way not given an honest account of it then fine sack him

The Castle may give colour to the story but I assume the place was shut.

In these days of CCTV and dashcams, many frustrated journalists who haven't got their quarry will no doubt be looking.

Cummings did what he did to safe gaurd his child primilary, he did not break the guide lines laid down by NHS England . And what about the gutter press outside his home where they not breaking the social distancing guidance , just to get a photograph.

Remember those who went to second homes/holiday homes to self isolate in what they hoped to be a more secure environment, these people were very swiftly discouraged and informed that this was not acceptable, yet Cummings can apparently swan off to a cottage which is conveniently empty but ready to live in.

Big play on safeguarding his child, of course his situation was “unique” no-one else had to make difficult decisions??????? But it’s OK some are simply above the common herd and able to do as they wish.

No need to worry Cummings will not be going anywhere NO 10 will sit tight and wait for the storm to blow over, the opinion of the general public isn’t important until election time.

Your not supposed to notice the press disregarding the rules,

your supposed to throw your hands up in faux outrage over a man they hate taking his child to be looked after by his family when he thought he had a deadly disease.

I suppose if they had lived round the corner this story would have died

Its all about the political miles in essence.

It appears that three rules have been broken. One is leaving the house when you’re symptomatic, another is travelling far distances and staying overnight elsewhere, and the third is having a person – in this case a child – go from one household to another household.

I agree about the press. They really shouldn't have been in his face like that.

I know there are those desperately trying to make this a left / right issue. It isn't. Not unless the Daily Mail has suddenly turned socialist. Trying to excuse this behaviour by shoehorning Brexit into it is conveniently muddying the waters. Brexit is over and done with. Get over it. Nobody is trying to change that. It's pointless and a waste of time and energy. The only interest in Brexit is now 'how', not 'if' or 'why'.

It's a trust in the government issue. Not only did Cummings break the lockdown rules, he then went on to break government rules regarding SpAds. He lied his way through his press conference. And what kind of SpAd holds press conferences, all about themselves, in the garden of Downing Street?

Now there is a minister resigning, clergy getting death threats and back benchers being quite vocal in their protests about this situation. So these Tory MPs and minister are closet lefties? Of course not. They've been on the front line, comforting those who've lost loved ones, who've been unable to say farewell to family, because of the government's 'regulations'. One rule for Cummings, one rule for the rest.

There was a 'tell', at the end of him holding court, a little smirk that psychologists are united in considering that means utter contempt. No big revelation, but it does confirm what most people, left, right, centre, are thinking. A backroom employee used government property and assembled the national press to lie directly to the electorate, with the backing of the PM, to protect his own job.

If you're OK with that, we are back to kneejerk tribal reactions, not considered thought. In which case, I personally find your opinion redundant. Whatever differences I may have had with their policies, I'm certain that this would not have happened under the authority of the last two Conservative Prime Ministers.
