    UK to 'reverse Beeching'.

Who can remember the 'Axe Beeching' graffiti of the 60s?

Oh don't get me started on that Moron, all I am going to say is when the Transport Secretary Marples gives a man a mandate to cut the money British Railways needed to keep going and his family business Marples Ridgeway was building roads says it all as far as I am concerned. Not only that but British Railways had to publish a tariff for moving goods which was undercut by Road Transport who didn't have any such restriction on prices.

The second big mistake was Labour not reversing the decision when they got in at the 64 election.

Transport links across the whole of the UK are lacking - industry needs transport.

Some reverse Beeching would be great.

Beeching left me some fantastic cycle lanes through conservation beauty spots.

    I reckon it's a meaningless soundbite. A distraction.

Just one mile of railway costs literally millions.

Given the government's current spending, and the double threat of the upcoming recession and Brexit, there is no way they can find the money for a few miles of track, never mind reverse the Beeching cuts.

Nice idea, but no chance, IMO.

I'm sorry to argue with you but several Beeching axed lines are already in the process of being reopened Cambridge to Oxford via Bedford and the revamped Bletchley flyover crossing the West Coast Main Line . The Old Waverly Route Edinburgh to Carlisle, Bury to Rochdale has just been proposed.

It was a tragedy that so many of the lines that Beeching closed down were dismantled and the trackbeds were built on in such haste that it ruled out any chance of reopening in the future. The Southport to Preston line was one example. If this line was up and running today it could be financially "in profit". Don't forget that Beeching wanted to close down Southport to Liverpool and it was only because of a hard fought local campaign that it remains open.
Remember the Great Central Main Line that ran from London, up through the Midlands - Nottingham, Sheffield, Leeds, Manchester. It was the last main line to be built and had it survived it would have provided the increased capacity that we are told is the real reason for the HS2 "white elephant".
But, there are examples all over the country. Don't blame Beeching - he was doing the job he was appointed to do. As already pointed out, it was Earnest Marples who put his own personal interests before the transport needs of the future.

Good news, I'll be glad to see them reopened.

Quite a list of reopened stations but at the end is an up to date list of proposed reinstatements.

The Cheshire Lines was closed in the early 50s, nothing to do with Beeching. It was like the Altcar bob, uneconomic.

Apologies and thank you for that.

I did not know Woodvale was once Woodville.

    Interesting list, thanks.

Wonder if they'll ever open / reopen the line from Southport to Ormskirk. I imagine that would be popular.

Size: 17.8 KB ) and others have been agitating for the restoration of the Burscough curves forever and a day. What is it good for, if not rail connections to Ormskirk, Maghull & Liverpool? It will require the Department for Transport to make good its Decarbonising Transport promises — almost unbelievable promises (coming as they do, from a Tory government!) A GREEN recovery?

I reckon it'll take a good deal of carrot and stick to change (for most of us) the automotive habits of a lifetime. Of course, many local residents have the added incentive of staying above sea level.

If we were in Lancashire it would have been done probably, but when it comes to West Lancashire Council and Sefton Council disagreeing about who it benefits the most and who is going to put the most money up I doubt it will ever get done. Sefton don't really consider anything that doesn't involve or improve Bootle.
