The Grammar Police. Who finds them an irritant?.

Several threads on here have gone off topic because certain posters have chosen not to engage with the topic, but to comment on another poster's 'incorrect' grammar.

Do any other posters find this annoying? Not only is the meaning of what is being said by the poster the grammar gestapo are criticising invariably clear, but it also demonstrates how limited their own understanding of language and its purpose actually is, and perhaps also how .although they have nothing of value to contribute to the topic, they want to say something even if it is, in the context of that particular thread, pointless and worthless.

Grammar police: Please try and understand the simple practical fact that usage of a living language may be inappropriate but it is never incorrect.

Haha. I agree entirely. Hectoring is often inappropriate.

As the usual butt of Degys *hectoring over my grammar,

yes it is an irritant and would be much better received if the post also contributed to the subject.

Still on the grand scale of life it doesn't amount to much and I am sure in the real world he would get past my sometimes admittedly slack grammar quickly.

In the early 90s I had the privilege of working with and being advised by Dr. Duncan Green, who had been Director of the Toronto Board of Education and Assistant Deputy Minister of Education for Ontario. Dr. Green was a master of the language, yet he had no time at all for the quibbling champions of the often unnecessary comma.

In some ways I take it on the chin, I have had the benefit of an education which I rarely use and posting on here whilst doing something else is often evident.

Why has elbow been censored out?

I don't find someone correcting grammar or even spelling an irritant, as some of the spelling I've read over the years is shocking.

Maybe, someone could find it useful.

Don't forget, not everyone is 100%, not even me.

But Degys as I keep telling you it wouldn't be my post,

it would just be a sanitised approximation of what I want to post.

Think of it as raw milk rather than homogenised and pasteurised,

a press release honed to blandness by constriction with someone else's rules.

There are as you know some posters on here who write with problems, don't put them off, their contribution is as valuable as anyone else's.

Now you've lost me, Pub. Are you saying that a version of what you write that has all punctuation or grammatical errors corrected in it would be a sanitised approximation of what you want to post. That your punctuation and grammatical errors are important, maybe even essential, for our understanding of what you post? The unsanitised true and complete (not approximate) version? That is really surprising, even coming from you. I have a feeling that you might well have lost of few others with this argument in favour of erroneous grammar and punctuation.

The "grammar police" don't bother me at all.

I don't usually correct member's errors, with the possible exception of one member, who, when claiming to be an authority on a subject, makes a spectacular error when spelling the subject's name.

If a post is riddled with spelling errors, lacks punctuation and paragraphs, I usually try to decipher it. If it proves to be too time consuming, I often give up. Once again there are exceptions to this rule. If I'm aware that the author has difficulties, I take the time to read their post. I would never discount someone's contributions on the basis of their grammar.

You are so right, of course! There are a few posters on this site who openly admit to their linguistic problems, others that regular readers recognize instinctively as people that have linguistic problems. I've never seen anyone comment on their posts in a negative manner. Like you, most of us will spend a little bit longer to get the point. But when people constantly refrain from using punctuation, while having a vocabulary that well exceeds the average, I find it annoying, to put it mildly. Maybe the poster in question might benefit (and help others) with the "education he has but rarely uses" by starting to use it? I only ask.
I have a selective memory, but maybe you can remind me of the times I have spelt members'/subjects' names incorrectly in a spectacular manner? I don't doubt for a moment that I have, at least once. Or maybe I shouldn't have Said that.
