If he had held his hands up from the start, apologised and explained he may have had a more sympathetic hearing, as it is he displayed contempt and arrogance to the rest of the country, which has probably created more harsh feelings than the actual transgression.
I agree with you wholeheartedly on the holding up of hands but, if reports in some quarters are to be believed, a good deal of what was reported in the Mirror was at best - gilding the lilly and at worst - outright fantasy.
I believe that even if, as Cummins believes, he acted within the rules his actions fell outside their spirit.

Having said that - the journalists involved with the original story do not seem to have been to concerned over the integrity or the facts of the original report and informants.

Add the that the almost feral behaviour of some champagne lefties outside his home, photographer's behaviour bordering on assault, endorsement of the locals behaviour by a recent Labour leadership candidate and you could be forgiven for wishing Cummins could be cut a little slack.

    What errant nonsense.
Whilst I can agree with you that cuts were made in the wrong place - do you really suggest there would have been a team within the NHS, sitting around drinking tea, waiting for this virus to appear?
We have shown that we can react quickly, when needed, and put in place systems or resources at next to no notice - the Nightingale hospitals demonstrate this.
World wide procurement problems exist but a never ending procession of medics are queuing up to bleat and berate on this. They are of course aided in this by their cheerleaders in chief, the BBC, who it seems will stop at nothing to put a never ending moaners club in front of us - presenters included.

The Mirror story was factually correct, sure they went for the throat, bit of pay back for the right wing treatment of Corbyn.

Cummings behaved wrongly in any case you wish to make, acted purely in his own interests with no regard for the rules he helped to formulate, then tried to deny it happened, when that failed, still no acceptance of fault, still apparently believes that he is a superior being to all others.

Zero sympathy, the master of spin and fluff, failed spectacularly, tough.

Incidentally whatever makes you think the media scrum outside his home was composed of left wing journalists? I don't think there are that many left wing journalists in the UK.

As I said - I'm with you on Cummins' behaviour but, and I don't know if I've got the wrong end of the stick here about which paper published it, one of the 'witnesses' has admitted to making his story up.
Also, on gilding the lily - I was referring to the 'spoken to by Police' report which has been shown to a bit of truth stretching.
I think you may have missed my point a little. If someone has erred and, a robust attack is to be mounted, the the Caesar's Wife principles need to be adopted.
The apparent unravelling of the original story has, in effect, diluted the pressure on the man.
Reports in some Sundays highlighted 'alleged' affiliations of some of the demonstrators. There can be no doubt about Thornberry's credentials.

Perhaps you should learn to differentiate between the government bodies who are responsible for administration of the NHS, and those who work in health care services. There's one hell of a difference.

What exactly do you mean by that? Are you sat on your high horse again, looking down your Roman nose at the plebs surrounding you? I'm surprised that an intellectual of your ilk would spend so much of your time with lesser beings.
So there have been threads and threads mentioning the support of the NHS, how the government has run the NHS down, and posts on this thread about how the NHS isn't being criticised, and Spaffer still insists we're 'running down the NHS'? Priceless.

This is the idiocy of the Winker (misprint) and the ardent Brexiteers. I won't say idiocy of the 'right', as about 60-odd Tory MPs have shown some mettle and stood up on behalf of the electorate, so I won't tar them all with the same brush. I've no doubt they'll pay at selection time, and rumour has it that Penny Mordaunt is for the high jump over the Cummings debacle. Not sure what they can do to May as she's pretty much untouchable, unless Johnson decrees he is the the first PM and no others came before.

Not sure which is the worst, this groundless superiority complex for ticking 'Leave', or the shoehorning of 'Corbyn' into everything. The jury's out on the first, until at least next year, the second is pure desperation.

The difference between the puce-faced Winkers and those of us 'lefty losers' on here is that given the fact that 60-70,000+ poor souls have died, we'd have quite liked the government to do well. I'd much prefer Johnson & the Britannia Unchained Gang had done their utmost to prevent unnecessary deaths, rather than cause them. I'd be absolutely delighted if we were at the bottom of the League Table of Death, rather than in competition with the USA, Brazil & Russia in the medal places. I'd be the first to applaud them. As I have done over their handling of the furlough situation. Top notch job. Shame about the deaths they caused, but the economics have been good so far.

Had it been Labour in charge, I'm pretty sure Spaffer & co couldn't bring themselves to say the same.

Brexit zombies, endlessly searching for brains.

How has the story 'unravelled', if you don't mind me asking?

Not at all Toodles, the bloke was on the ropes and the high moral ground well and truly taken.
However, visions were clouded by the ultimate prize of bagging Bo Jo's bff and the 'adjustments' made to the salient facts were there to be picked off at will by any Cummins friendly people.
It inevitably happens when the person and not the facts are tried. The facts were irrefutable.
Cummins could argue that he acted within the rules but not the intent but, there have been a procession of people in public life shown up as doing similar

The media concerned stretched the truth on the Police spoke to Cummins over his trip - one of the witnesses admitted to making his story up for a laugh - the irony of the journalists mob surrounding him observing zero social distance discipline - the patent nastiness of the demonstrators outside the family home - a prominent Labour politician condoning that behaviour.

All of the above deflects attention from the incident itself. Having said that the story is now tomorrow's fish and chip wrapping.

Cummins did argue he was within the rules a fact that has been disputed by some of the Government experts, the 'Grey Areas' just highlight that the Government have brought in badly formulated laws and regulations that haven't been fully thought through. The number of 'High Profile' people getting caught out highlights the immorality of modern society, if you put yourself up as a leader in Government or any organisation Public or Private there is, or rather should be a price tag for the greater rewards received. The higher you go the better your conduct and example set to the rest of Society should be, you cannot expect the lowest in an organisation to be honest if his / her supervisor isn't and that goes all the way up the tree to the top.

I wholeheartedly agree. I think one of HMG's failings in all of this, perhaps influenced by a touch of 'island mentality' has been a determination not to impose - like those dastardly foreigners and, treat Jo Public like grown ups - very naive.

    Thanks.

I hadn't read about Thornberry saying that. 'The people of Islington South & Finsbury can always be relied on to say it as it is.'

What a stupid thing to say.

I can see how people are angry, though. For all the reasons we've detailed on here. But demonstrations and protests should be peaceful whenever possible. Not least of all in case his kid witnesses it.

    Touch premature I think.

To quote Ashwani Gupta, Nissan's head of global operations, referencing the possibility of a no-deal Brexit.

"You know we are the number one carmaker in the UK and we want to continue. We are committed. Having said that, if we are not getting the current tariffs, it's not our intention but the business will not be sustainable. That's what everybody has to understand."

The default no-deal position is WTO terms with an automatic 10% tariff.

Sunderland is running with 20% spare capacity and 70% of production goes to the EU. The recent suggestion that Nissan's partner, Renault, may transfer production to the plant is a complete non-starter.

I've notice the unicornists are not being quite so mouthy about this development.

The EU always comes out with the same.

Its Groundhog Day and yet more political posturing as Barnier plays to the galleries.

They would like a deal, we would like a deal, just get on with it.

We will now have the doom and gloom cliches out again , prepare for a rehash of hand wringing prophecies.

    It's so familiar and tedious.
