A) A fully joined-up network? I agree that sounds expensive and disruptive.....Yet, to achieve the required result, you do not have to put cycleways down every street and road - even the Dutch don't go that far.

Forget about modifying all those 20mph side roads for a start, they're fine as they are - provided drivers keep to the limit. It's on our 30mph roads/main routes where urgent action is required. Wherever possible, this wants to take the form of kerbing-off a cycle-lane along either side, e.g. on Lord St. And where there's off-road space, laying tarmac cycle-paths along the verges - e.g. on L'pool Rd, PNR, etc.

B) I'd have to agree if that was so, but it isn't....It's about creating safe roadspace for the thousands of 'hidden' cyclists. I.e. for an entire wave of new riders, like the ones who came out during lockdown - then vanished when the traffic returned.

That would be fine, IF, drivers kept to the speed limits, but as we know, not all drivers, yourself included, do.

How do you explain every bike-shop in the area and beyond, selling out almost overnight? Or the long line of disillusioned would-be riders, who have been unable to get hold of a bike - any bike - ever since? The widespread desire to get on a bike this year has been completely unprecedented, just ask any bike shop!

Speak for yourself......I keep to limits, within a realistic margin of a couple of mph either way. Yes, it would be great to fixate 100% of the time on the speedo, and travel precisely at 20 or 30mph, etc. Imo, it's equally important -if not more so - to also look where I'm going!

I am speaking for myself, I manage to keep to all speed limits, and in 51 years of driving cars, vans, HGV’s and coaches, somewhere in the region of three million miles, my licence is as clean as the day it was issued. I guess that must also look where I am driving, because I have never had an “at fault” accident.

A temporary sales boost as many looked for something they could do during lockdown, no shortages of bikes now, plenty of ads for bikes of all types in stock.

I've been driving for 62 years. Clean licence still. No at-fault accident. Never been stopped by the police in my life. Never caught by a speed camera. But I don't manage to keep to all speed limits, and I doubt the word of anyone who claims that.

Agree.....Had you claimed that, justbecause would very likely have accused you of thinking you were 'better' than the rest of us. It's a no-win scenario!

What baffles me, is how someone who must be looking where they're going, can be 100% certain their speedo hasn't crept over the limit meanwhile, by one or two mph...maybe they have two pairs of eyes?

Btw, my license is also clean.....and being law-abiding, have no reason to fear speed-traps - been through plenty with no problems.

I'm the same. The only time I was pulled over was riding my bike. Apparently I was doing 35 in a 30. Although I had no idea. I got a warning.

When I was younger, I did sometimes exceed the limit, but haven’t done for a long time now. I am quite able to keep my eyes focussed on the road and know for certain that I haven’t crept over the limit because I use my speed limiter at all times.

That explains much.....But you can't realistically expect the average person to precisely replicate the performance of an electronic speed limiter.

E.g. an upwards incline will slow a car, requiring adjustment of accelerator, as does cresting a hill and heading downwards. At which point a car will increase speed, unless accelerator setting is reduced/braking is applied. In process of which, speed will vary slightly from that desired, whilst the required speed is re-attained. By your definition, if at any point the vehicle exceeds the limit by even 1mph, the person driving is then automatically branded 'a speeder'.
