Norwood Road School 1950s
I saw part of an old thread from a few years ago that stirred my interest.
I went there in the late 1940s and early 1959s.
I remember that for the Queens Coronation under the guidance of the Headmaster we planted flower boxes under the windows with red geraniums, white alyssum and blue training lobelia.
On the edge of the playground inside the front wall were planted a number of trees which we had to water each day. I guess that they are long gone now.
My only other memory of the school was that there was an air raid shelter at the top of the back playground.
On leaving I went onto KGV but unfortunately only spent one year there as my Mother and I moved south to live in the Isle of Wight.

I went to Norwood Road School from the mid-1940s until I left for KGV. There have been many threads on here about the school, and teachers such as Fanny Cooper and Jimmy Wright. My headmaster was Mr Rimmer. Jimmy Wright was the best teacher I ever had in my life. Such a shame that the search engine on this site is useless. Lots of interesting history has gone down the drain. This is a picture I have posted earlier, showing the Norwood Rd team that won the Southport School Cycling Championships (or whatever it was called). I am standing at the back. Probably about 1950-1951?

Age is simply a matter of mind - age doesn't matter if you don't mind

Agree with comment on Search.
it was your original message that led me here.
Unfortunately I don’t recall any teachers names.
I lived at the Lanehouse end of Chester Road above what used to be Jagger Removals furniture shop.

I also took part in a school safe cycling competition sometime in the early sixties and was selected to join the town team. The Southport team of four plus one reserve made it through to, and won, the regional final in Liverpool, but I think thats as far as it went. I remember being introduced to the Mayor at the time and having our photo taken with him or her with our trophies. We were accompanied by a couple of policemen who trained us up on road safety and knowledge of the highway code. Sorry but I can't remember names or any other details and don't know what happened to the photo.

I was there 1950 to 55, same teachers and head plus Mrs Boddington and Mr Fitzgerald.

I estimate the Black & white photo was 1971.
The colour 1972.
I remember visiting mothers friend around that time in that area
before we moved to another part of the country.

The bad old days of the 11+ and classes of over 45, Mr Fitzgerald ("Fitzy") took the top class for 2 years and ruled with a cane.
Class designations were "A" and "P". "A" was the top class and "P" was the parallel class. Apparently using the term "B" led to the pupils getting an inferiority complex. Fitzy had a bad leg and wnen he was in pain the cane came out a lot.
Another reason for the strict regime was some kind of league table amongst the schools for the most grammar school places. Churchtown and Farnborough were often top. It was abit like the Duddy Shield in schools football.

Discrimination began well before the 11 plus.
The 'Top Table' was a feature of my childhood in various junior schools.
Same for the High Schools though it was more subtle being comprehensive.
Teachers rewarded the able with their attention.
The less able vied for attention in other ways.
Disruptive children bullied the 'swots' and teachers bullied the less able physically.
