    Is Southport Finished

According to the other site - the whole town centre will be closed off to traffic by May of next year.

"This could result in many streets being blocked off to through traffic over a huge area from Lord St to Eastbourne and Cemetery Road" See OTS Map

Look what happened to Chapel Street when it was pedestrianised.

    What do you think?

    Under Sefton Council - YES.

I've given up fighting for Southport. Sefton Council have killed it which was always their intention.

I think so too. Poor management has created an attractive crime area in Bootle, and a lack of imagination has murdered, yes murdered that which could have been the star of the North West. Had Liverpool maintained its individual identity, with its fantastic, iconic historic buildings, instead of imitating every other city around with glass and concrete blocks - the city would have been heaving with tourists falling over themselves to visit with national/international businesses wanting a part of it. You only have to look at similar cities across he globe to recognise that. But it has failed and it is taking every local area with it, particularly Southport because Southport has more natural attraction for visitors. Sadly, the powers that be, think that Southport can be made into commuter area, to increase the popularity of Liverpool - a foolish thought.

It doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

If I understand the map correctly ( which isn't easy ) there's a large amount of residential streets enclosed.

How's that going to work , closing them to traffic ?

    It's worth a shot.

It might bring people into town rather than passing through town.

I suppose it also depends on the plans for all the diverted traffic.

Hopefully in the future (if we want a future) there will be less and less motor vehicles on our roads.

    Got to start somewhere.

And with the loss of revenue from all the pay and display expect the council tax to double. Then there's the empty shops which will follow and pretty soon the town will resemble Morecambe of old with rolls of tumbleweed blowing down Lord Street.

There's no key or explanation to anything on the map, Shakespeare St appears to be the centre of the universe with Lord St on the periphery, perhaps that is the idea abandon the existing town centre and the few shops that want to keep going to be based on Shakespeare St.
The threads about it are useless and pointless unless accompanied by the supporting documentation.

How much revenue does 'through traffic' bring into the town?

And how much does the 'through traffic' contribute in terms of emissions and noise?

If someone was going from, say, Preston (or further north) to Liverpool, they would go M6/M58 wouldn't they?

So where is this 'through traffic' coming from and where is it going to?

    News …fake news?

"…the whole town centre will be closed off to traffic by May of next year. | "This could result in many streets being blocked off to through traffic over a huge area from Lord St to Eastbourne and Cemetery Road"" — post #1

Cllr. Pugh can raise a furore regarding Council plans without help from said! On this occasion, give the former credit for merely encouraging citizens to take an interest.

Southport's central business district offers limited choices for (north /south) through traffic. Lord Street (& adjacent streets), supposed to be the pre-eminent retail, leisure and event space attraction, has more vehicle traffic than is desirable. Relocating the rail passenger platforms toward Virginia Street would be a real boost to Lord Street's viability by allowing an alternative route across town.

As for “liveable neighbourhood” measures in the area indicated by

    “a liveable neighbourhood”
…Cllr. Pugh is sparing with details.

Release all that railway acreage to build a liveable neighbourhood by design from scratch!

Well let them carry on the Town is on it's last legs, born and raised here I am loathe to hang around to see the Bootle Commies and 3 cyclists hammer the final nail in the coffin.
Nancy and his two friends can ride their bikes round the National Museum of Dereliction to their hearts content.

You don’t need to go as far North as Preston, most people heading to Liverpool from Tarleton/Hesketh Bank/Rufford areas wouldn’t use Southport as a through route.

I would imagine most, if not all through traffic is actually quite local.

Yes, that was the point I was going to make, and Southport isn't really a 'through route' to anywhere. Places on national routes get bypassed or have motorways built nearby, so you can cruise past the towns you don't want to go through.
