I don't see a problem here in our town. My experience seems to be that 99% of shoppers are complying. Masks may not be completely effective but they do a reasonable job. Even the older school kids are following guidelines.

Well done Southport, better times are coming.

You are right most of us comply and most of us have the yes limited protection that masks offer.

If only we could separate those who don't want to play ball and send them to one of those chilly Scottish Isles to develop their herd immunity.

It is still a problem in our town, infection rates are high and the most dangerous places are shops, the supermarkets only pay lip service to alleged regulations, they still try to cram as many customers as possible in, the shops must thin out the customers, reduce the queues for checkouts and remove the obstructions in the aisles.

Shops are not so much dangerous but the place most of us have to go.

On an infection interaction basis, they probably come out better than a lot.

It's why we need granular data, not the headline grabbers from the more frivolous sections of the me-edia.

It is not I who has serious problems, I can assure you. For me to accept ANYTHING, it has to at least make sense, and what you are being asked to believe is anything but. Even if I accepted it - this virus is said very mild with 99.07% of the population NOT affected or hardly at all. It is such a lethal pandemic according to the media - they have to go out looking or it by testing people?? Have you ever known any pandemic which needed to be searched for? My memory does not serve me badly - I seem to recall, you damned well knew long before the media if there was an epidemic or Pandemic - you sure as hell did not need telling......repeatedly! Anyway - you will not have to worry for much longer, they are now churning out gallons of vaccines which you will not have to queue long for - you will be seen much faster than all those folk out there who are really ill, and need Doctor's appointments.

I can tell you think you are in the 99.07% that won’t be affected too much, because if you were extremely clinically vulnerable and in the other .093% and didn’t believe it .. you would act for the best anyway just in case it’s not a hoax. Even though you can be as healthy as a nut with NO underlying conditions and get it and be quite dead and buried within 28 days .
There is a lot of contradictory and often nonesense information coming out not to mention lockdown rules some that don’t make sense and some that do, doctors are speaking out how we have been misled and most people that I know don’t know or have not heard of anyone that has died from the virus alone without other complications so it’s easy to distrust the given info and figures that is helping certain agendas like contactless payment and even an app to locate you so it’s easy to see controversy.
I don’t believe everything either but I am in the 0.93% so I am hiding away pretty tight just in case thinking sacrifice a year to live another ten .

However, recent reviews using lower quality evidence found masks to be effective,

a risk reduction of 40 per cent for wearing masks,

The article clearly is not the anti-mask evidence you seek the last line sums up the writers position

This abandonment of the scientific modus operandi and lack of foresight has left the field wide open for the play of opinions, radical views and political influence.

What they're saying is there needs to be a more coherent approach and the writers might better start with that approach themselves as might you.
There would be a totally coherent approach but the media are loathe to use it for obvious reasons - vaccines could not be marketed if people felt they did not need them. - In fact there IS only one approach and that is by using SCIENTIFIC FACTS - something of which I am more than familiar with and which even a third grade science student could tell you.

Anyway - this present drama is now about to close - the next is about to be thrust upon you - the Germans aka the EU call Nachhaltigkeit.

This year, when they have been wearing masks, flu cases are down dramatically. They are doing OK with coronavirus too.

Really? Supposedly, cases are increasing here and why then are people still catching the common cold? Masks or no masks, in a couple of weeks we will be heading into the virus season.

It's just been on the news that cases in the region have dropped from 700 odd per 100,000 to around 240 per 100,000 which, is a great improvement but still not enough.

But I give you facts from reputable sources and you dismiss them without reasoning.

It is abundantly clear you have no formal scientific training.

I think you could best be described as self-taught at a low level but as any junior scientist knows without peer review you could well be bungling down a blind hole even at that level.

Good science is not about clinging to the wreckage of the bits that you like whilst the ship sinks.

Yes, we need more granular data which isn't being supplied, why, is it too embarrassing or too contradictory?

Going on the data supplied I find it disturbing that they've only sourced the infection to 125k places, also bearing in mind that contact in in supermarkets is only fleeting unlike schools and hospitality venues which often prolonged. I think that the use of how we visit shops needs to be reviewed. The big retailers are making increased money out the pandemic and should be doing more rather than trying to cram the punters in.

Much of Southport is hovering around the 200 rate and is falling, you can check the rate for local districts on

    https://coronavirus.data.gov.uk/details/interactive-map

Put a postcode in and you can zoom in, click on a district and you get local info.

    I think it is but I haven't read it so can't accurately comment;

    https://www.ukdataservice.ac.uk/get-...d-19-data.aspx

The best people to protect ourselves is ourselves not the retailers.

Most people apart from the Prof understand the obvious methods of transmission.

Keep clean, distance where possible and wear a mask suffices for most situations.

Yes, really. Cases of coronvirus go down in areas where people wear masks, no matter how often you deny it. People are still catching a cold, and flu, because kn@bheads like you are not complying. Every surface can hold germs that have been coughed out or been laid down by physical contact. So wearing a mask protects you from airborne germs but if you don't wash your hands frequently too you pick up a virus that way.

This is really primary school level science.
