Public Sector Pay
The countries beyond skint and yet the Unions and Labour are out whinging about pay staying the same for the public sector.
In so many other sectors its redundancy notices and cuts don't they understand how big the financial crisis facing us is?

Unlike the Private sector - Public Sector workers at least had a CHOICE. They have protected contracts and they have Union representation which most private workers do not have.

About 20 years or so ago, private sector wages were higher than the public sector equivalent and the Tories argued that job security in the public sector compensated for the gap.
Since then, Union membership decline has resulted in those exposed to market forces to forego employment benefits, such as holiday pay, sick pay and yearly pay rises that were common to the now retired community.
Stand your ground against penny-wise pound-foolish politicians has got to be motto for any self-respecting employees imho.

But it seems fair that those public sector "leeches" at Westminster get a £3k a year rise.
It always has been the biggest pigs clear the trough before the smaller ones get a chance to lick the empty space in the trough.
But not satisfied with being a disgrace they want to get back every ha'penny of the money they spend in "expenses".
The very Party who started The Greed is Good in the 80's have no right whatsoever to lecture anyone on financial probity.

Tories and employers in the private sector have eroded workers rights for some time, now they see the opportunity to continue the dash to the bottom, divide and rule is the order, set one group of workers against another, convince one group that others are over paid/privileged, distracts from the reality that the one group is underpaid and less secure thanks to any union legislation.
The fact that public sector workers have, in the main worked through the pandemic, they weren’t the ones filling the beaches in early summer when so many thought the whole thing was an extra holiday with pay.

Yes, you make a good point probably inadvertently but still, public sector workers jobs have remained and they have kept their wages at the full rate not the lower furlough rates.
These wages are of course paid by those in the private sector earning the money for the public sector to spend.
The effect of the pandemic on jobs is clearly worldwide so hardly can be claimed to be some specious race to the bottom conspiracy unless you are giving the virus special powers ?

The race to the bottom isn’t just recent, the pandemic is just another impetus, the virus doesn’t have special powers, it has brought more than enough problems without that.

Yet here we are with a Conservative Government that just keeps putting up the minimum wage rather eroding your drive to the bottom theory.
Do you have a theory b ?

What do you mean they had a choice? The only choice they had was carry on working or quit their jobs.
And clearly union representation is a good thing.

The public sector kept their wages at 100% because they were still working!
You make their full week's pay for a full week's work sound like frivolous largesse whilst the hard done by private sector gets 80% (from public funds) for doing nothing.
The public sector do of course pay tax too so their wages are partly self funded.

As much as I sympathise with the public sector workers there wages / salaries are met by the public purse and that is scint .
We are living in strange times and unprecedented borrowing, I can see this situation lasting for a very long time . I'm sure you would all agree .

Minimum wage should not be a target nor ambition, it is what it says, the bare minimum which is, or should be illegal to pay less under any circumstances.

What choice, what protected contracts?
Anybody is entitled to join a Union, it is their choice.

The Public Sector Workers provide a Service, that is what is paid for by the Public Purse, it makes not the slightest difference who employs them, many who are employed in one area may be Public Sector Employees and in a neighbouring area by Private Sector, most services are subject to regular tendering processes and have been for many years.
