As some have mentioned, I'm not sure that the future of vehicles is entirely electric. Emissions might be cut but there's a price to pay.

Hopefully there will be a clean alternative in the pipeline, no pun intended. Whether that's hydrogen or something else, I wouldn't know. But I don't see any government laying out the billions required to build the infrastructure for an all electric domestic car fleet.

They are having enough problems with one train line.

    Regarding post #16:

There are costs associated with all choices. Yesterday's solution is today's problem.

Seen in a [no doubt, quality] newspaper:
NINE years to build electric cars that do 400 miles on a charge, refuel as quickly and conveniently as petrol, and cost around £15k — plus build new power stations and retrain mechanics and AA men. Yeah, right. I haven't even got decent broadband.

A cynical, negative but nevertheless probably reasonable assessment of the technological hurdles. It all points to the likelihood that the world will NOT adequately respond to the problems we currently face.

There are too many vested interests, change does not happen unless forced, 20 years ago we were taking about running out of gas and oil but new resources were found so nothing has happened.

if the councils / govt can allow the building of houses on flood plains and areas in danger of possibly being under water in the next century from rising tides , then there must be no problem ...
carry on as normal .. ???

The present roll out of the odd point here and there is totally inadequate for current needs never mind the future.
Depending on the type of property a car owner lives in, it's a straightforward job to install as many solar panels as the roof will allow. A domestic battery bank and inverter can store the resulting charge during daylight hours, then supply 220 a/c when required.

Nothing too complex about putting in an exterior charging point either. All the tech is available off the shelf, from companies like Photonic Universe (I got my own setup from them)......then you're driving on clean and free power!

How about the millions of people who live in flats, apartments or houses with no off street parking and those with no parking on the road outside their homes.

Not quite so rosy for them.

Not only that but all the Office & Public Carparks will need wiring up, streets will need cabling, substations will need building with connections installing back to the powerstations, hospitality venues would need to provide connections on their carparks to compete but probably not have the capacity to support half a dozen or more connections.

So, generally, are we all agreed - Total Electric transport is not feasible without a huge expense on infrastructure and greater improvements are required on the vehicles. Existing car batteries are unsuitable. So all this likely to be a pie in the sky?

If only it was so straight forward, for starters, must own the property, need to have some roof surface facing the right direction, either go for a binding contract with a provider, or buy and have panels installed, those in flats etc, not much chance.

In sunnier countries, hot water has long been provided by solar systems, now of course more are using panels for power generation, here not quite so good.

Would be worth asking the landlord/management company about fitting a charge-point in your parking bay.

There’s going to be charging leads stretched across pavements / foot ways where houses front doors open directly onto the pavement

“Where there’s blame, there’s a claim” the lawyers will be rubbing their hands together.

Panels don't have to go on a roof, they're just as good at ground level where a garden gets the sun......For those who have the space (and funds) for the kit, it's a worthwhile investment - even without a 'leccy car.
