Favorite childhood toy
What was your favorite toy as a child and were you given it for Christmas? The one that gave me the most pleasure was not a Christmas present, nor was it brand new, but I remember it vividly 60 years on and it probably shaped my future to a certain extent.
My Grandfather gave me a large wooden chest with a tray inset, and the whole thing was filled with Meccano complete with clockwork motors. Oh the things I built with that over the years. Everything from the Blackpool tower to planes and cars. When I left school at 16, I became an apprentice toolmaker and I'm sure my interest in engineering stemmed from that Meccano set.
What was the toy that influenced your life if any?

Meccano! That's a name I had totally forgotten. I tried it once of twice on a Friday at OLoL infants if the Rocking Horse was in use, but it didn't appeal. Although I am now able to ride a horse, if I need to change a light bulb I have to get a little man in.

A properly made catapult instead of a home made one - real powerful too.

Ah Meccano
My dad must have been keen to see me with a "boy's" toy, so he got me a set
I dutifully constructed a crane, takin ages, and tested it trying to lift a box of matches. As I turned the handle the match box stayed resolutely on the table and the crane bent until if touched it.
That's how handy I was.
