    Blinding Headlights!!!!

Please please please can someone, anyone, advise owners of the increasingly popular, SUV type of car, and many other modern cars, that -

IT ISN'T NECESSARY TO ILLUMINATE THE ROAD FOR A TWO HUNDRED YARDS IN FRONT OF YOUR BLOODY CAR!!!!!!!

I drive for a living and am becoming convinced that my retinas are in tatters due to badly adjusted main beam headlights. Most nights I seem to get the WW2 bomber pilot experience.

I've asked Santa to disable all the main beam level adjuster switches in modern cars, after locking them in the lowered setting, in an attempt to save my sight.

More and more cars are now moving to Xenon (HID) and LED headlights, they are more expensive than traditional halogen bulbs but give a brighter light and last longer.
They used to be on just the “Top End” models but are becoming more popular on “cheaper” cars.
My car has self levelling Xenon HID headlights and really do make a massive difference when driving at night.

It's not just driving at night. Lost count of the times I've been blinded in the daytime because some people think they have to have their lights on all the time and some just don't understand the difference between dipped headlights and main beam.

Monitor your vehicles people and look at the dashboard to see what it's doing.

A lot of new cars seem to have moved away from front fog lights, to be honest they were pretty rubbish anyway in serious fog.
None of the last three new cars I have brought although being top spec models didn’t come with separate front fog lights or an option to fit them as an added extra.

    Blinding lights

I too can't see the point in having full beam headlights on at 10am in the morning. It's broad daylight and yet, when I'm waiting to cross over to go to the shop I am constantly blinded by a steady stream of cars who still have their lights on.
The trouble is with modern cars that as soon as you turn the engines on, the lights also come on and there are no switches to disable them like you had in old cars.

Are you sure your not getting confused with daytime running lights? Under EU rules, since 2011 all new cars are required to have daytime running lights that come on automatically when the engine is started, and which turn off automatically when headlights or sidelights are lit. Your daytime running lights only apply to your headlights and your rear lights won't come on automatically - so remember to switch on your lights as it starts to go dark.

These are just the sort of lights that are blinding to other road users, I find these 'blue' lights very dazzling and disorientating. That's not
to say that prats with lights on full beam aren't a pain in the proverbial.

Nope, it's like yesterday I was on my way out at 12.15pm and loads of cars still had their lights on. I was putting my hand up in front of my face to attempt to hide from the lights. It's just too much.

The worst times of day for accidents are the twilight hours when it is coming light in the morning and going dark in the late afternoon simply because if the street lights are off you don't need your lights on in the minds of a lot of idiots.
If I have my lights on I know people can see me unlike those who think their car will explode if they switch on the lights before it becomes pitch black.

Modern cars, mine included so I might be a guilty party in this have an auto setting, they come on/off automatically.

Looking out of the window this morning I know my lights would be on, I've glanced down at my dashboard before and seen might lights have come on and thought are the really needed so I have flicked the switch to manual, at what light level the auto setting turns lights on or off I don't know.

There is also a dial to adjust the lights for the load of the car, I'm guessing that this is the main culprit?

Just as bad are those driving around with a bulb(s) out, some compensate by switching fog / driving lamps on to compensate.

Sure wrongly set headlights can certainly be a nuisance, but have never been troubled by headlights during daylight, the headlights on SUV type vehicles are a problem mainly because if set level they are at eye level for other drivers, certainly the new type headlights are extremely bright.

Running lights shouldn’t be a problem for anyone, auto switched lights only come on as daylight is fading, my own car has auto switching, they simply don’t come on in good light, can be annoying when driving into a covered area such as multi story car park or tunnel, but otherwise only come on when light is fading.
