Yet another convoluted way to have a pop at cyclists.
I can't say I've seen many elderly and vulnerable people out exercising in the cold, wet and windy weather. And I certainly wouldn't expect to find them in the road or on a cycle path.

Not ideal cycling weather recently either.....However, now looking forwards to better days ahead, just a pity many cafes are closed.

Likewise when cycling. I ride at the recommended 1m from kerb, to avoid grids, edge defects etc, as should everyone. Most of the time, that's enough to keep 2m from pedestrians. However, I will move further out, if passing a pedestrian who is stood at kerbedge.......Motorists must anticipate that possibility - and give Covid cyclists safe clearance.
If I'm driving along a road at 20mph, 30mph or whatever the road conditions and law allows I wouldn't expect pedestrians to be throwing themselves into the middle of the road! Makes far more sense to simply turn away from the approaching pedestrian or even better look before you leap.

Speaking personally, I don't throw myself into the middle of the road. If I went around doing that, I'd be mincemeat by now.....It's generally only necessary go a metre or so beyond the kerbedge, to avoid other people by the required amount.

All drivers should be aware of what's cooking on the pavement ahead anyway, even without Covid. There can be drunks, kids, dogs, nutters, clowns and goodness knows what else about. Any one of which could make a stupid move, as you approach.

Turn away? Do you mean walk back in the opposite direction? Well, that could be a plan - except the shop I visit isn't in that direction.

That would be turn around, turn away to face the other way so you aren't face to face?

Might help a little, but you're still walking through the invisible trailing cloud of each others exhaled breath. Bearing in mind the much increased virulence of this new Covid strain, I'd rather not take that unnecessary chance.

Alas, no mention of cyclists though.

    Complete and utter nonsense.

It's simply asking joggers and cyclists not to run or cycle close to other people when they're out.

It is certainly not saying don't go, both cycling and jogging are good forms of exercise but they do involve heavy breathing and usually without a mask so their exhalations go further.

Many older and vulnerable people are out walking even on these cold wet days couldn't you just try and be less selfish.

Went out with my daughter today for her daily 5k run (I cycle). She gives every one a wide birth, Usually going onto the road. Not only for them but for herself, she's the one taking deep breaths going past people that look like they have got lost in the snow. If you are venerable you shouldn't be out, We are in a lock down.

With all due respect to yourself and your daughter - there are a great number of places where people can run without having to go into roads or be near other people.

A great number of elderly people would far prefer to be out and socialising with others of their own age, for they recognise that they are not getting any younger and would prefer to die happy than locked in a tomb. You find that out by talking to them.

Selfish? I give everyone a wide berth when I'm out whether that be on foot or on bike.
I'm just saying I have yet to see any examples of the behaviour you describe let alone many examples of elderly and vulnerable taking outdoor exercise - maybe that's because, far from being selfish, I'm not taking my exercise where they are likely to be.

Funny you should say that. Because cycling in recent cold weather, I discovered that by keeping my mask on, it acted as a beard substitute to protect my face nicely against the icy wind.

According to the British Medical Association, this is not a new strain, it is merely a variant of the existing virus. In all of previous history, a subsequent variant virus is weaker than the original virus. But then...people believe what they want to believe.

She runs from our house, Or do you want me to teleport to a beauty spot?

Nice that they can socialise. Something I've not done since March.

To talk to them I'd have to get close to them. As it happens I have a 79 year old mother and 83 year old Father, That I've not been able to hug for 10 months. Having to miss out on their 50th wedding anniversary and my 25th wedding anniversary. Sacrifices are being made by everyone. Or at least should be.

People should be out to exercise not socialise.

You tell the 50,000 a day that catch it that, or the 900ish that are dying each day.

I've come to the conclusion that people are now going to do what the hell they like. Natural selection at it's best. What I do wish they would to is permanently die those that insist on going on marches, So the NHS know they don't deserve treatment.
